It started from a positive Hxc (hardcore) who values reality and life (meditative type of HxC)..They write songs about life and how to value it NOT about breaking up bull crap, i wanna commit suicide sissy ass music. Green day is not punk by the way..they are defined as grunge by the purists.

The Descendants are pioneers of MELODIC punk..not POP punk..thats what the problem with MTV is..they label bands (insert genre here) not knowing how to call them but they label them anyway..

MTV made AVRIL, AVRIL claims she is the punk rock princess, The majority LURVS MTV, now they say punk rock is avril..good old punk rock ethics and beliefs are ruined. THANK YOU MTV!!!

Melodic Punk - never heard that term before.. for me, punk is punk... then there's faux punk which I put The Descendents in. The Clash is melodic.... but I'd never call them poppy. They're actually lighter and more mellow than The Descendents yet I find the Descendents pretentious.... and silly.

As far as Green Day goes... I won't refer to them as Grunge just `cause they came out at the same time as The Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, etc... their sound is far from being grunge... and they do have punk origins no matter how Punk purists deny that fact.

But having said all these... it's still music..... I'd listen to any of them if they come up with something good. I do have Dookie stashed somehwere. They made a few good songs on that album.

You say it's not about who's cool and who's not yet you frown on these people who voices out their opinions on these things. Clearly you have strong opinions on the matter as well and it's obvious that you've been reading about these things..... you have this "elitist" type of mindset. But how far can reading take you anyways unless you've really experienced it first hand.

Point is: How old were you when bands like Sebadoh, Pixies, Fugazi, etc.. were around? You read about them but have you really experienced on how it really was back then? Same scenario if I was talking about The Velvet Underground, New York Dolls, *** Pistols, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, etc... I love their music, I buy their albums, I know stuff about them.. but then it's only limited to the things that I read and hear ... I'll never really know how it was back in the 60's and 70's .. I'll never really know how or why they wrote those songs... what made them push their art to its fullest.

I'm very aware that there are kids out there who strives for the real thing.... a kid hears The Used over the radio.... loves the sound, then finds out about the old school stuff which purists holds dear. Then this kid changes his opinions about The Used.... he starts hating the mass media.. and the word "mainstream".

For me, I think they're just striving to be COOL....... me, I love music.
