Davao City to host 6th World Christian Gathering

A NON-government organization will be gathering around 1,500 indigenous people from different tribes in the world for a cross-pollination of cultures and best practices.

The Tribal Mission Foundation International, a volunteer organization, will be holding the 6th World Christian Gathering on Indigenous People (WCGIP) on September 11 to 17 in the Insular Hotel.

WCGIP assistant director Ma. Elena Bicaldo said it is the first time for the country to host the said event with Davao City as the chosen venue.

"Davao City is very unique. It has more than 42 indigenous groups, that's why we chose the city," Bicaldo said during the Kapihan sa PIA conference Saturday.

According to Bicaldo, the Asean Tourism Forum helped in showing the uniqueness of the city, which is why the group preferred Davao City as its venue.

She added that Mindanao Tribal Mission Foundation is also based on Davao City.

"Meanwhile, on the practical side, it would be much cheaper for us," she said.

Bicaldo said the gathering would be a cultural revitalization for the indigenous groups.

"We will encourage the indigenous people to express their indigenous belief and culture," she disclosed.

WCGIP Vision Keeper Terry Le Blanc, who will be one of the speakers in the conference, said ever since the conference started they have always seen big outcomes.

"The gathering will have expected and unexpected outcomes that will be very productive for the indigenous people," said Blanc.

Expected to participate are countries such as US, Canada, Scandinavia, Russia, Australia, New Zealand and several countries in Asia, to include the Philippines.

National Youth Day to gather 10 thousand in Davao


AT LEAST 10,000 youths are expected to gather for the National Youth Day in Davao City slated on November 8 to 12 with this year’s theme “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Dennis Villegas of the National Youth Day event said 2,000 are expected to come from Luzon, 2,000 from Visayas, and 6,000 from Mindanao.

Villegas said this will be the first time that Mindanao, particularly Davao City, will host the event.

“I encourage everybody to join. There will be great challenges. Even if it’s a Catholic event, it is also open to others,” Villegas said during Thursday’s I-Speak forum.

Villegas said Protestants have signified their interest to join the event even if such is lead by the Catholic Church.

He added that there will also be 10 Muslim representatives to the event.

National Youth Day media relations and promotions chair Cheryl Bilo said the holding of the National Youth Day aims to gather all young people in the country, deepen the faith of the participants to the Lord, and show how the Church love and care for the youth.

Villegas said there will be discussions on faith, nationalism, inter-religious dialogue and others. On evenings, he added, there will be prayer festivals.

“This will also help boost the tourism industry,” Villegas said.

Villegas said there will be three catechetical sites — at the Holy Cross of Davao College, University of Immaculate Concepcion and Ateneo de Davao University.

The opening and closing of the event will be held at the SM grounds

Agri dep't eyes 10-Thousand hectares for mango production in Davao


WITH government expanding agribusiness and developing the Mindanao "super region" and the "cyber corridor", the roadmap for the development of the mango industry has identified around 10,000 hectares for expansion to boost mango production in Davao Region.

Agriculture Secretary Domingo Panganiban issued this statement in a speech delivered by Department of Agriculture-Southern Mindanao regional executive director and chair of Mindanao cluster Roger Chio during the opening of the 3rd Mango Marketing Conference Tuesday in Davao City.

But he reminded mango growers to adopt good agricultural practices (GAP) for production and handling of the fruit including planting requirements, field establishments, cultural management, harvest and post-harvest handling and marketing.

He said cheap and effective production and post-production technologies have already been developed but they have yet to make them accessible to small farmers.

The technology that Panganiban was referring to was extending the shelf life of agricultural products to 28 days through the establishment of the Controlled Atmosphere Protocol for Commercial Export of Philippine Mango.

The other technology was the Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) film that extends a product's shelf life to 19 or 22 days.

"These are all good but we have to bridge the gap between scientist and farmer through innovative means of disseminating the technology," he said.

He said the industry has so much to look forward to with new milestones in mango technology and reduced restrictions in key Philippine mango markets.

In terms of world mango production, Philippines ranked 7th in 2005 exporting some 46,000 metric tons of fresh mangoes valued at US$44.6 million.

Panganiban however said that the figure only covers four percent of the global demand indicating that the global market for mangoes is really much larger.

Studies also showed that local market for mangoes indicated a significant increase in the domestic per capita consumption from 9.94 kilograms per year to 11.25 kilograms a year
