I think the only reason why people see mining as destructive is because here, the regulations are unclear and/or not implemented. If this were not so, then I believe mining would help move our country forward. Of course, this regulating and implementing is easier said than done, unfortunately.

the supposed regulations are quite clear in its intention: to encourage more mining by giving away virtually everything to the mining operators, and disregard the devastation at its wake. we have seen this in Rapu Rapu Island, Albay, in Catanduanes, in Claver, Surigao del Norte, and so many other places.

compared to other forms of industrial activity... i think mining is the most destructive... and for our country's very bad governance record... i would rather opt to oppose it... besides, these mining companies are foreign multinationals, who will just leave the site as soon as they've got everything in it, and made profits for their mother companies... who cares?

i think logging is the most destructive.

there are different kinds of mining minerals and methods to extract.
depende rajud na, medyo bias ko kay akong erpats nag handle og mining, pero ang open pit mining nga scrape ang load mura raman na og earth moving. The difference is the mountain is high in iron ore content so dili kaayo mabuhi ang mga tanom, puro rana siya sagbot. mas destructive pa ang earth moving kanang yuta gigamit sa SRP kay mamutol pa og kahoy.

....sa Palawan karon... totally gi ban na ang mining.. illegal na !
the provincial gov't in Palawan is trying to protect and promote
their tourism industry.... which is a wise alternative....!

responsible logging is different from illegal logging in the sense that in the former, reforestation is applied, while in the later, nothing is done after taking out the tree.... of course "it depends" on the logging company's full implementation of its reforestation program and "it depends" on DENR's monitoring and control.... in the absence of responsible logging companies, nobody is looking after formerly forested areas poached by illegal loggers protected by powerful politicians, military, if not "NPAs".

on the other hand... whether earth moving or open pit mining or scraping and loading... part of the earth is moved somewhere else and does not return afterwards.... mostly ORES moved to foreign countries for processing... if processed locally..... the tailings goes where?

    its my opinion anyway...

mining requires trees to be cut down to clear the area. this makes it worse that mere logging.

once upon a time, we prostituted our sovereignty. then our economy. then our labor force. then our resources.

no wonder our culture and our mindset is damaged. we have next to nothing that we can call our very own.
