Former presidents Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Joseph Estrada on Tuesday admitted that they had advised President Rodrigo Duterte to strengthen ties with China.

A report by Lia Mañalac in 24 Oras on Tuesday said the issue came up during the National Security Meeting last July.

"That was in the context of our national security council, where President Estrada was also present," Arroyo said.

"'Di ba President, nung national security council meeting, ang pinag-usapan nga yung China relations. So he has advice from all of us. Both of us advised him to strengthen it," she added.

Both politicians see nothing wrong with President Rodrigo Duterte's move to strengthen ties with China.

During Arroyo's term, the Philippines had a strong relationship with China, after the latter funded the Northrail project and the NBN ZTE. The two projects were discontinued after being embroiled in a controversy.

It was also under Arroyo's term that the Philippines underwent the Joint Marine Seismic Undertaking with China and Vietnam in Recto Bank or Reed Bank, which is located within the 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zone of the Philippines.

However, Arroyo clarified that she has no other role in Duterte's administration.

"My role is more to support his legislative agenda like I filed a resolution for the constituent assembly, and I filed a bill to increase of the salaries of the uniformed personnel, and increase the SSS pension," she said.

She also evaded questions related to the United States, which Duterte has recently been distancing the country from.

"He's the President. He has the prerogative to say what he thinks will be the policy," Arroyo said.

"I'm not president anymore eh so it's not really for me to talk about those things," she added.

Meanwhile, Estrada said that the Philippines should maintain its ties with the US, but that it shouldn't meddle with the Philippines' internal problems.

He recalled that the US also gave him advice during his term.

"When I declared all-out war against the MILF, they asked me to stop, which I didn't follow," he said.

I doubt BPO will be affected. advantage ra kaau sa west mag hire ug labor dris pinas. Plano ra gyud ni duterte ky i separate ta from colonial mentality.

its not loving the guy. eeeewww! but its more on loving the country as he loves our country.
for me he is by far the most sincere President that we have. i dont know what others think though.

for the people who hate him is nothing but splash of yellow color in them.
