    ASEAN Summit flowers die off

THE wilted flowers in the center islands of the summit ceremonial route of the 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit are an indication that Cebuanos are beginning to lose interest in summit preparations, said Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmena.

“Even the vigilance of the people is gone... But it is only a natural reaction because of how they treated us,” Osmeña said, referring to the national government.

“It’s hard to be led by people who are inconsistent. The credibility of the government has diminished.”

The mayor said the decision of the 12th ASEAN Summit’s National Organizing Committee (NOC) to postpone the summit to January was unnecessary and was a major disappointment for the Cebuanos.

Due to the postponement, the city government was forced to tackle the problem of how to restore its beautification programs.

The flowers and flowering plants that the city planted on the center islands – worth P2.4 million – had life spans of two months. These were planted early November.

President Gloria Macapagapal-Arroyo, who visited Cebu last Tuesday to inspect the summit venues and the ceremonial route, said she wanted “more color” added to the landscape of the center islands of the summit ceremonial route.

But as much as the city government would like to again beautify the center islands, Osmeña said there was no way these could be filled up again with flowering plants.

He said the city nursery’s supply of potted flowers was no longer enough. Even those that were set aside as replacements have already started to wilt.

“I’m sorry but they postponed the summit, and now the flowers have wilted. We can’t keep the flowers alive for so long,” said Osmeña.

On the upside, the mayor said he was thankful he decided not to push through with a plan to order hundreds of ripe mangoes for the foreign gusts.

“They would have been dried mangoes by now,” the mayor joked.

Osmeña, however, said he still wanted to cooperate with the summit preparations, and instructed the city’s parks and playgrounds commission to set aside P500,000 to purchase flowers from the city’s mountain barangays.

He pointed out, however, that the city’s summit beautification program would require eight times the amount of flowers that mountain barangays could normally supply.

He also said that by this time, most of the supply of flowers would already have buyers.

what a waste of taxpayer's money if the ASEAN summit will not push through...

about the summit flowers on the center island, all i can say that better put artificial flowers, for the ASEAN guyz won't mind to find out if they are real or not )

    CICC hazards fixed
    SunStar - Cebu
    December 29, 2006

CHANGES in the schedule and the nature of the meetings to be held at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) require an upgrade of the audio and other technical facilities inside the building.

But Capitol consultant Pablo John Garcia said it will be the National Government that will spend for these.

“The basics are there. There’s nothing wrong with the equipment, they just need to enhance it. It’s just that the meetings they intend to hold there have very specific requirements,” said Garcia.

    Interior design

Last Dec. 1, Malacañang took charge of the interior design of the CICC, the equipment and set-up at the International Broadcasting Center and other technical requirements.

Asean summit spokesman and Ambassador to Malaysia Victoriano Lecaros said earlier that the CICC is ready for the summit next month.

During her visit to Cebu last Tuesday, President Arroyo said she is pleased with the CICC design and said it is better than the convention centers in Switzerland and Malaysia.

But she told the governor that organizers are worried about the audio and technical facility. (JPM)

let's keep our hopes up! the repairs in CICC indeed is good news and that's just half of it. All's prepared and we're just waiting for the main event!
i hope the delegates and the heads of state will be impressed in everything Cebu and the Philippines have prepared for them.

That's a good suggestion, they can minimize the amount of flowers they'll be buying by using artificial flowers in areas which will not be frequented by the guests.

Anyway, these are only trivial problems that shouldn't stand in the way of our being upbeat about the summit. After all, we worked hard for this and will enjoy the fruits of our labor when we see our guests delighted with our preparations.

it's a pinoy tradition that we show hospitality to our guest, even in fiestas that some of us will resort to credit in order to prepare for the occasion. How much more during the ASEAN summit that we are hosting VIPs and heads of states?

our mentality towards this event should be the same as that of Tomas Osmena. That the summit will highlight CEBu and the rest of the Phils to the WORLD audience, and eventually INVESTMENTS will pour in. So instead of praying nga dili madayun, why not pray for the SUCCESS of this HISTORIC moment that we Cebuanos could benefit in the long run!

wala man mangandoy nga dili madayon.
