Just learn a few Cebuano words:

    Cebuano: Maayong buntag!
    Tagalog: Magandang umaga!

Cebuano: Unsa akong sakyan padung Colon?
Tagalog: Ano ba ang aking sasakyan patungong Colon?

Cebuano: Ako si Juan.  Ang akong misyon kay ang pagsakop sa inyong lugar ug ang pag-ulipon sa inyong mga kababaihan!  Mwahahahahaha!!!
Tagalog: Kumusta, ako po si Juan.  Ikinagagalak kitang makilala!

i'm from manila but my dad got assigned here in cebu. i am very fluent in cebuano and i'm very proud to be an adopted cebuana! gnahan akong relatives mubalik mi dd2 pero dli na mi uy! we love cebu!

to those who plan to transfer here in cebu, learn the cebuano dialect because it will do you good especially in haggling and commuting. you won't be fooled by the "opportunists."

another thing, please don't generalize manilenyos! not all from manila are superior or proud!

Cebuanos are like French people, we are very proud but warm people.

So try to speak in Cebuano with your Tagalog and people will appreciate that and they will be very glad to help you.

Speaking in Tagalog all the way will only get you animosity.

Try to familiarize and memorize the streets, since Cebu is the oldest city we were not planned to be on a grid or blocks with straight streets. You could easily get lost in the maze of streets.

Don't wear jewelry or bring gadgets when you commute.

Find a place to stay away from squatters areas because these places are prone to crime. Unfortunately, being a metropolis we have lots of squatter areas scattered all around the city.

Its okay to speak tagalog. I dont think cebuanos will really mind. and since majority of the cebuanos can speak tagalog as well, im sure they will even converse with you in that manner just to make you feel comfortable. True though that you shouldnt sound maarte and dont carry with you the so called "kikay" high pitched tone.

In finding a place to stay, watch your budget so we can give suggestions.

Learn the routes here and learn how to say "Dili ko kasabot ug bisaya" (I dont understand bisaya)

Dont walk around the streets talking on your cellphone, you might get it snatched.

The food prices are very reasonable and they taste good.

Drink red horse instead of san mig light.

watch your image and reputation while youre still new and meet the right people. Cebu is small and people know each other so rumors go around quite quickly. So avaoid being the talk of the town too early in your stay here.
