Labor Day power grab plot fizzled out--military spokesman First posted 06:15pm (Mla time) May 01, 2006

AFTER sounding the alarm over a supposed plot to unseat President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for several days, the military said the power grab attempt has fizzled out.
Military officials said that the relatively thin crowds that took to the streets on Labor Day were proof that attempts to wrest power from government did not have public support.

"We can see that their planned political mobilization, widespread civil disobedience -- none of their plans materialized. We believe the public does not want to be used," Armed Forces Public Information Office (PIO) Chief Colonel Tristan Kison told reporters.

"These concerted actions have dissipated, hopefully we won't expect chaos. There will be calm, peace, and we can move on," Kison added.

Kison was referring to "Oplan 4G," an alleged plot to overthrow Arroyo by left- and right wing groups.

Under the said plan, said to be part of the broader "Oplan Hackle," 500,000 protesters will march to Malacañang on May 1 and when a "critical mass" is reached, disgruntled soldiers will withdraw support from Arroyo.

Military spokesman Major General Jose Angel Honrado said "Oplan 4G" failed because it was "very very [sic] out of [touch with] reality" and that the people are too preoccupied with economic woes to worry about destabilization attempts.

"We can see the maturity of the people, the maturity of the men in uniform… So, I guess we are learning, we are learning as a people," he said.

In the first place, there was no planned coup. The destabilization, coup de etat etc. was just a figment of teh imagination of the GMA and her lapdog generals. Actually, they were ashamed because they were proven wrong. They want to portray a picture of fear but when their concoction was proven to be a hoax, they try to cover up lose face by saying things which are far fetched.

But what can we expect. That is their job. They will try to please their bosses even to the point of lies, spins and misinformations.

The AFP and PNP have done a great job in ensuring that law and order be maintained in the midst of Labor Day Celebration. It is relatively peaceful considering that some of the labor groups have conducted their rallies yesterday as they have expressed their sentiments on salary increases. The president, to answer the call for such benefits, introduced substantial and meaningful non- wage benefits to workers such as scholarships, tax exemption, government health insurance and pension plans.

The military top brass has a reason to be loyal.

    Here is the reason:

1.Thelmo Cunanan, first to cash-rich PNOC chair, then to equally fabulous SSS, which in reality is financially troubled.

    2. Dionisio Santiago, promoted recently to PDEA chairman, after "languishing" with prisoners at the DILG under his adored Angelo. Of course,

    3. Roy Cimatu as ambassador in charge of would-be Angelo de la Cruces, and

    4. Benjamin Defensor as whatever for the anti-terrorism campaign.

    5. Diomedio Villanueva, first as postmaster-general of the continuously losing and financially-bled Philippine Postal Corporation, and now a sinecure at another government corporation.

    6. Efren Abu was rewarded with our Indonesian embassy, recently retired Navy FOIC
    7. Ernesto de Leon got the plum post of Australia, even before he had collected his retirement bonus.

From the police, she has of course rewarded

    1. Leandro Mendoza the humongous DOTC, big in size and big in money.

    2. Hermogenes Ebdane to DPWH, with similar size though reduced potentials for money.

    3. Reynaldo Berroya, Gualberto Mendoza, and Roberto Lastimoso are somewhere in the woodwork, at LTO, MRTA, and Customs.

Thats a strong reason to be loyal to Dona Gloria even at the expense of trampling civil liberties.
