MANILA, PhilippinesâTwo Asian actors are on board for filmmaker Adolf Alixâs new project.
Taiwanese superstar Ken Chu, who starred in Alixâs film âBatanes,â has agreed to co-produce the directorâs next movie, which is about the plight of Filipino soldiers assigned in the Spratly Islands.
âWe were in Batanes when I talked to Ken about the concept. He got back to me recently and said he has convinced other Chinese producers to invest in the new film,â Alix told Inquirer Entertainment on Tuesday.
The film, titled âKalayaan,â will star Lao-Australian actor Ananda Everingham in the lead role. He appeared in the 2004 horror film, âShutter.â
âKalayaanâ also features Filipino actors Joem Bascon and Arnold Reyes.
âWe are currently in the process of securing permits. We hope to start filming soon,â said Alix.
âThank You Girlsâ
First-time director Charliebebs Gohetia recently finished filming an all-Visayan movie in Davao titled, âThank You Girls,â which depicts the struggles of contestants in gay beauty pageants.
Gie Salonga, half-brother of celebrated singer-actress Lea Salonga, plays the lead role. The film will also feature first-time Visayan actors.
Gohetia was the editor of Dante Mendozaâs âTiradorâ and âFoster Child.â He also wrote the script in Alixâs gay movie âDaybreak.â
âThank You Girlsâ is about five gay beauty pageant veterans who travel from Davao City to Cagayan de Oro with the mission of conquering âthe grandest competition of beauty, personality and brainsâ in the province.
âTYGâ is produced by New York-based outfit Coral Consulting. It is set for release in July.
âResikloâ
Mark A. Reyesâ âResikloâ has been invited to compete in the 10th Uding Far East Festival in Italy, which runs from April 19 to 26.
The sci-fi flick, which stars Sen. Bong Revilla, bagged the Best Picture Award at the 2007 Metro Manila Film Festival. It tells the story of Crisval Sarmiento, a soldier who leads a part of the human resistance against invading aliens known as the Balangs. Because of limited resources, humans are forced to scavenge for any thing they could use as weapons to fight the invaders.
The film will also be screened at the Puchon International Fantastic Festival in Korea in July.
âBalikbayan Boxâ
Mes de Guzmanâs âBalikbayan Boxâ will represent the country in the Festival of Independent Cinema in Barcelona, Spain this month, according to the filmâs assistant director, Noel âTarikâ Montano.
It will also compete in a film festival in Italy in June.
The film tells the story of children of overseas Filipino workers who send home balikbayan boxes, or parcels of gifts and provisions to their families.
According to Montano, also the production manager of âBalikbayan Box,â co-produced by Sampaybakod and Cinelarga Productions, has received invitations to compete in film festivals in California and Colorado in the United States.
âHaw-Angâ
Bong Ramosâ âHaw-Ang,â a digital film that chronicles the struggles of a nun in her quest to educate Ifugao children, will compete in the Indianapolis International Film Festival, which runs from April 23 to May 3.
The film, which is endorsed by the Department of Education, received an Award of Excellence in Feature Film from The Accolade Film Awards in California in January. It is produced by Sizzling Gambas Productions Inc.
Ramos said his next project, about organ donors in the country, is currently on the drawing board.
