Arroyos also eyeing asylum in Spain, Portugal?

MANILA, Philippines - Justice Secretary Leila de Lima on Friday said she is still verifying information that former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her husband, Mike Arroyo, are seeking asylum in 2 other countries other than the Dominican Republic.
Speaking to ANC's Headstart, de Lima she received a forwarded text message from a justice official that said the Arroyos were seeking political asylum in the Dominican Republic. She said that she received the information on the same day that she announced her rejection of the Arroyo's request for an allow departure order (ADO).
The justice chief said she has also received information that the Arroyo couple might seek political asylum in 1 or 2 other countries other than the Dominican Republic.
"This did not come from a text message. Medyo reliable ang source ko tungkol dun," she said.
She declined to identify the countries but a Philippine Star report said the countries are Portugal and Spain.
Spain is one of the 5 destination countries that Arroyo listed in her request for an allow departure order. The other 4 are Singapore, Germany, United States and Switzerland.
In the interview, de Lima said the Department of Justice had been studying the standards of the 5 countries when it comes to granting political asylum.
She said that one of the 5 countries has very liberal laws or rules on granting political asylum. She said possible reasons to request political asylum include alleged political persecution and even humanitarian considerations.
De Lima said she is coordinating with the Department of Foreign Affairs to confirm the information. She noted that foreign nations are not compelled, in the initial stages, to disclose information on applicants for political asylum.
"We cannot discount such intention to seek political asylum because if they leave and do not return, then how else can they justify their continued stay in that country," she said.
The camp of former First Gentleman Mike Arroyo earlier denied rumors that they are seeking political asylum in the Dominican Republic.
Arroyo even claimed that the former First Couple had never been to the Carribean nation but later backtracked and said the former President had visited the Dominican Republic last May.
