Of course sure. Why would Marcos be concerned for the Cebuanos. Contraryo god mga tawo dire against niya. And you are right. Leyte was a darling during Marcos time... Unsa man diay si Imelda?

walay unity about the tagalogs and bisaya is a reality wether we like it or not. Both teams now are baptizing themselves in the name of unity. You should be able to understand but if you cannot comprehend, you don't understand what politics is all about.

450,000 teachers to get extra pay for poll duties

Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Jesli Lapus assured yesterday that the 450,000 public school teachers with poll duties will be paid for their additional work during the upcoming elections.

Lapus met with Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman Benjamin Abalos recently to thresh out issues that beset teachers during the performance of their poll duties. They have reached an agreement on the remuneration of teachers for the May 14 elections.

"It was very fruitful," Lapus said of the meeting. "We have clarified certain doubts which our teachers had (regarding) the benefits promised to them."

Teachers who will serve as members of the Board of Election Inspectors (BEI) will be given a guaranteed payment of P3,000, regardless of the duration of their participation during the polls.

Half of this amount shall be paid when the teachers come to collect election paraphernalia, and the remainder when they submit election returns to the city or municipal treasurer.

In addition to the guaranteed payment, teachers will also be given P300 transportation allowance.

As in the past, the Comelec will deputize private school teachers and other civil servants to augment the BEIs for the estimated 250,000 election precincts all over the country.

Lapus said some of the public school teachers will serve as team leaders, each of whom will supervise and monitor the election operations of 10 precincts. These team leaders will be paid P3,000 for the entire duration of the polls.

DepEd superintendents and supervisors who will serve as members of the Board of Canvassers at the provincial, city and municipal levels shall be given an honorarium between P3,000 and P10,000. The amount will be based on their actual workload, computed at P200 per precinct.

A utility person will be assigned for every 10 precincts to provide support services such as cleaning the polling places and doing errands for the election inspectors and teachers. Each utility person will be paid P1,500 for their services.

"These initial agreements between the department and the Comelec will be contained in a memorandum of agreement in order to assure our teachers of definite commitments," Lapus said.

The Comelec has also agreed in principle to allow the participation of the Philippine Association of Law Schools, which will provide legal or paralegal services for the teachers, according to Lapus.

"We can now officially pursue with the association the feasibility of the law schools’ involvement, subject to the approval and deputization of the Comelec," he said.

Lapus also said teachers with poll duties will undergo a seminar on Feb. 17 at the DepEd central office in Pasig City. He said teachers should be vigilant because their lives are at risk for the duration of the election period.
