Cool, I'm glad they've given us the same feel of BOB and yes , unlike the campaign in Europe during the landings on dday, the Marines that arrived in Guadalcanal didn't see heavy resistance until in the jungles, and at several points during japanese insertions/reinforcements. Guadalcanal and several islands in the southern solomon islands had japanese bases and an airfield that could threaten supply routes between US, Australia and New Zealand. Guadalcanal was an important campaign in the Pacific Theater of war

its part of the japanese tactics to withdraw to the forest and fight them in close-quarter battle and mostly at night... the japanese station to that island was basicly outnumbered, but not outgunned....

this similar to war plan orange innitiated by mcarthur during the philippine invasion, the only difference is that they are taking a defense, while on guadalcanal is basicly doing counter-attack...

Something like that ... Actually Guadalcanal was not in the original plan but when reports arrived that the Japanese were building an airfield in that area, it was added to the plan. Nimitz played a big part because together with Admiral King, they both planned the operation. After this was approved by the Joint Chiefs, Nimitz was designated as overall Allied commander in chief for Pacific forces. This was in conjunction with an Allied offensive in New Guinea under Douglas MacArthur, to capture the Admiralty Islands and the Bismarck Archipelago, including the major Japanese base at Rabaul. Part of that goal was the American reconquest of the Philippines.

as what ive know henderson airfield is not yet 100% operational when it was taken by the marines, if japan sucessfully finished the airfield it could cut the only supply line and support for australia, making australia vulnerable to invasion.... the recapture of the philippines was one of the big turning point in the pacific war since philippines is strategically located, and it can be used as a staging point for invasion to japan and cutting down the supply from malay peninsula....

when they arrive in luzon, they made mad-dash to manila to recapture it and free the pow, and fulfiling he's promise to return...

I don't know how big of a turning point the Philippine campaign was. It was important, for sure, but there was a lot of debate between Nimitz on one hand and Macarthur on the other about the need to to retake the Philippines. Some commanders wanted to save time by bypassing the Philippines altogether and going straight to Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After all, the Americans already had their naval base in Ulithi, a logistics center in Guam and the B-29 base in Tinian from which bombing missions were flown against the Japanese home islands.

Some wanted to take Formosa (present-day Taiwan) instead of the Philippines as this was much closer to Japan and to China (where the Japanese were still firmly ensconced), but this was discounted because the local population was deemed hostile to the Americans. In any case, Macarthur got what he wished for and waded ashore on a Leyte beachhead in October 1944.
