I know why they destroy stranded hardware. I just couldn't see how anyone could walk away from a crash which was serious enough to disable the chopper.... unless they'd already disembarked.

A lot of the news sites and the interviews from former operators are saying the group that did the raid was NSWDG so the shooters would most probably look a lot like this:

Cheers.
Based on my sources there was no AC130 gunship nearby because that particular area was high risk in terms of collateral damage (there's a girl's school with dormitory just 200 meters south of that compound). A specter cannot do any "spot-and-gun" because the escape routes (roads) would all pass by residential areas--imagine blowing up a non-hostile Pakistani upper-middle-class home by accident, and how that would play in US Media. Since this is a surgical op, the best surgical air compliment would be Longbows/Supercobras plus "The Beast of Kandahar" acting as "eye in the sky"...

The term is Reverse Engineering. If the birds carried relatively new technology, the enemy can take a look at the insides of the on-board comms and computers and learn about what hardware, frequencies, etc. these units are using.
Same reason they blew up the downed choppers in Black Hawk Down.
See this video: YouTube - Special Forces assault building similar to Bin Laden attack
There is a reason they refer to the other birds circling above as QRF (Q meaning "Quick"). How can they be 'quick' to support the assaulting troops in they 'make exit' to another location? And these birds can hover in the air for hours. Remember the C2 bird in BHD? It was hovering above Somalia for most of the raid.
RPGs can only go up at a certain distance in the air then it eats up its propulsion and falls out of the sky. The 160th have learned their lessons from Somalia.
And no, they do not know how long exactly the op will last. They may have an idea based on their simulated assaults, but the unknowns going into the raid are still there.
Spectre gunships are great for CAS and I've read on several occasions that they can perform danger close operations -- but I am not sure if they are reliable this close to the troops.
Better do some reading here...
