He's right, some people are overreacting. It's just ceremonial and isn't meant to be taken seriously. He's not going to be commanding an entire battalion in a real war.

Di man tingale kataw-anan, kay it's the military officers themselves who gave such honor kay MP and other athletes, and I think, with their vast military experience, they're the best judge on to whom should such honor be rightfully bestowed.

I don't have any military background, but I think the commendation of athletes has a practical rationale behind it. The rank they give is for reservists, so it means, in the event of war ra ni sila mag-serbisyo, when kinahanglan na jud almost all able-bodied men (and even women). Naturally, magkulang ang mga career military officers, so who better to lead the civilian reservists than those civilians who have shown strength in body and mind? Syempre athletes would be among the most suitable candidates because of their intense physical regiment and the mental focus and determination required to succeed in their field. Of course dili lang pud athletes, apil pud tong mga tao who have shown great skill in leadership, like Tomas Osmena. And in the case of Pacquiao, naay added bonus of boosting morale among the civilian reservists. Mas ma-inspire tingale ang mga tao if they knew they'll be fighting alongside a sgt maj who has shown tremendous fighting spirit. And the fact na politician sya, naa pud tingale ni sya gamay na experience in leading people.
