That's exactly the point why this is a good issue to talk about. That's part of the big picture. A lot of us seem to be oblivious to the real implications of this entire fiasco and think that what happened was nothing and is merely a simple issue of "a lousy show making fun of a kid" (which in itself speaks volumes about what has become of the quality of entertainment and life in general here in the Philippines. Seriously, it's OK to poke fun at a 6-year old on national TV and make him the object of public ridicule?).
We Filipinos have become too tolerant of bullshit (can't think of a better term) that happens on TV. We've made variety shows such a big part of our lives and hold the Tito Vic and Joeys, the Randy John and Willies (and the others that have come and gone) in such high regard - high enough to even land Tito Sotto a Senate seat, zero credentials notwithstanding - that we allow their misjudgments and ego-trips a hall pass. We allow them to pick on people on their shows, especially the poor and uneducated. We're enforcing their belief that money is the end all be all. "Hi, welcome to the show! Allow me to poke fun at your ignorant non-educated self in front of national TV! Don't worry, here's P10,000 for your troubles!" I don't know about you guys, but last I checked a fellow countryman's dignity is not worth P10,000.
But that's a different topic and a different thread altogether. The meat of the issue here is what happened on that March 12, 2011 episode on Willing Willie.
(This was never about Willie for me, but the way he has reacted as of late to the backlashes of this entire fiasco has shown us who Willie really is.)
Has it ever occurred to you to try asking why a lot of people (not the MTRCB, not the DSWD or any other social rights group you can think of) have been up in arms about this? Do you really think everyone, including the celebrities who aired their grievances through Twitter, did it for the publicity? What do they need it for? Are they not entitled to their opinions like you and me? And if anything, they did not go on public television to show their disgust at what happened (unlike Willie who went on a personal rampage on live TV verbally assaulting and naming those who "attacked" him and belittling them. He thinks that he's the only one entitled to an opinion and that his show should never be attacked because he gives away money on his show, which he describes as "help" and "concern".)
In short, did it ever occur to you that maybe this isn't a publicity stunt and that they actually really care about what happens if Willie goes unpunished and scot-free notwithstanding what happened on his show? Can any of you prove that they're actually doing this to put themselves in the spotlight?
