Funny. I was actually looking for people who are selling UP merchandise because I wanted to check the prices. Then, I came across this thread. I was very eager to see what the "discussion" is about and unfortunately, there are still many people who do not get UP and what it represents. It is very SAD.

Aside from it being a state university and what it serves as stated in the constitution, UP Cebu gives bright minds, those who are willing to be able to think critically, a place to hone their talents/skills and learn more to SERVE THE COUNTRY.

Going to rallies and NPA accusations..
UP students join rallies because they care. We are not plain stupid that we go to the streets and shout just to get attention. How shallow is that? That is simply illogical and students in UP are not trained to end up illogical and irrational citizens. It is just that we care and we express it in such means that other people may not want. But then again, we are not placed in UP to get attention and please people. We are here to serve the people in a way that is deemed more effective than other means. Fortunately, we get the job done.

I really hope the "Aktibista" and "Hambugero" brands come off already. UP is a well-respected school. If you are not "happy" with how our school is being run or whatever, then stop yapping about it because it is not yours to yap about. You paid your taxes, yehey to you as a good citizen. But your taxes also go to other things, why don't you complain about the faulty bridges and the inferior-quality roads that we have for a change.

UP students are trained to think critically. We do not generalize. We respect other schools and we do not see ourselves as higher or better people.

A person who does not know how to respect just shows that he/she has no respect for him/herself.

i passed the UPCAT but never did study in UP, even if i succesfully passed a scholarship which i can use in UP too.
Not because of those negative criticisms posted in this thread, but because i chose other school which i believe can hone me wholly.

UP is a great school, no doubt about that. However, to those UPians, please understand too the people who are ranting in this thread, as i also believe they have the right to, too. Tungod tingali sa ilang frustrations ug disappointments sa gobyerno, abot nalang ngari nga thread ila yawyaw.

Know what, grabe kadako ang ako tax. But if i have a say to where it should go, i beleive dapat 80% ana mungadto sa education.

I am a believer of those graduates from UP nga someday, they would bring the much needed change to Pinas. Of course, kauban sa mga non-UP folks nga level-headed.

I don't know if I take u seriously or not. But yes, you're funny! U must be a joker...a poor joker that is.

I don't want to hurt ur feelings or anybody's feelings for that matter, but there are times that I just can't help but speak out to correct or negate or refute what is false.

How did u come with an absolute certainty that UP is a top producer of NPAs? Be that as it may, do u think it's a valid reason that merits a legal action to abolish the school? How many NPA leaders that u know came from UP? And how many Philippine Presidents and countless Supreme Court Justices, Senators, scientists, national artists, top cabinet members and diplomats who graduated from UP?

Don't you know that most doctors in the barrios graduated from UP who sacrificed their own welfare and of their own families, trudging the treacherous paths in far flung areas of the country just to give medical care to communities who have no hospitals?

And why are u so mad about NPAs? If ur a military, I can understand u. If ur not, I don't know if u understand what you're talking about.

There are NPAs not because there's UP. There are NPAs because there's something wrong in our government system that needs some fixing. U can't fault UP for producing NPAs if indeed ur claim is true. Truth is, UP cultivates and nurtures the fertile minds of these young students to be the catalyst of change in our society and be responsible citizens. It just so happens that with brilliant minds and critical thinking, most alumni would somehow figure prominently in our country's political system, be it a politician or NPA. It's a choice. There's no subject in UP about insurgency, nor a course on insurgency.

UP is there so that bright students from poor families who can't afford the sky-high tuition fees from private schools can pursue their college education at a lesser cost. In case u don't know, UP adopts a socialized tuition fee system. So not all students there whom u accused of receiving ur tax are studying for free. Remember, parents of these students also pay their taxes too. And ur tax isn't wasted either.

But may I know how much tax do u pay to our coffer?

If your wealth is equal or more than that of Manny Villar or Lucio Tan or John Gokongwei and u pay ur tax then I can understand ur sentiment.

    @ queenston

Im a tax payer myself but please dont be too arrogant here just because we are not Lucio Tan's/Gokongwei's and yet we dont have right air out our sentiments?? toinks!! Nabgabayad pud baya mi Ug TAX sir.. Yes I admire UP for its academic excellence (producng Top notch research, national artist, scientis, politicos etc.etc) BUT whether we like it or not every single centavo that Juan dela Cruz paying to our National coffer is important to UP's 18 billion budget...

humble pud unta gamay ning mga taga UP oi(although dili tanan)..

Pero sa UP, gipa skwela pa sila sa government, sige pa sila ug reklamo. Kung ipasara na, diha namo reklamo nya wa koy labot kung sige mo ug reklamo kay wala namay UP. Remember that part of my taxes also goes to that school. I have the right nga mag reklamo.
C'mon, don't besmirch the honor of ur school, if indeed ur from USC. Is that how a SUMMA CUM LAUDE from USC think? I wonder how did u get that lofty honor from that school. Don't u cringe in shame claiming to be as such but unable to justify it? I know some friends and office mates who graduated from USC and they didn't get the honor that u got, yet they're not as stupid as an ass. USC, along with UP has some of the country's Centers of Excellence and here u r, a USC grad no less than SUMMA CUM LAUDE, foolhardily mouthed off on a topic u hardly know about.

Yes, some students (the poor ones) at UP are aware that the government is paying for their tuition. That's why they can't afford to just sit and act like mechanical beings (read: robots) class after class, without giving back to the people. The student rallies u saw either on campus or on the streets are a gesture of both compassion and empathy with the people only attributed to critical thinkers and patriots. They stage rallies to express the sentiments of the general populace regarding national issues that matter most to the political and socio-economic well-being of our country. It's obvious that u don't understand ur right as a citizen in this democratic country.

If ur filthy rich and didn't even mind paying the high tuition fee in USC then what r u yapping about? How much tax do u pay to the government that u have the nerve to complain on UP's existence that part of ur taxes go down the drain? Do u have a foundation for the poor and underprivileged? I hope u'll get enlightened during the Holy Week.

    God bless u!
