Bella admits to shady past, but ‘murder not part of it’

Her past may be considered shady by many people, but 35-year-old Bella Ruby Santos said it doesn't include murder.

In an interview, Santos told Cebu Daily News that while she may have committed a lot of mistakes, killing children isn't one of them.

Santos, a native of barangay Inayagan in Naga City, southern Cebu, said she has yet to fully grasp what hit her in recent days.

Santos along with her British companion Ian Charles Griffiths are facing the likelihood of being charged with the kidnapping and murder of eight-year-old Ellah Joy Pique of Minglanilla town last Feb. 8.

The Cebu Provincial Police Office said they may file the charges sometime this week or early next month.

Santos, who was interviewed in a cottage near her family's old home in Naga City, said she was shocked when she first heard about the news.

“Wa koy matubag kay wala ko makasabot nganong naingon ani. Wa ko kasabot nganong ako ang ilang gitudlo (I can't give any answer because I could not understand what is going on and why they accused me of committing the crime),” Santos said.

Santos was investigated after a Mitsubishi Pajero that was supposedly used in the crime was found within her home.

Santos said she was in Manila when she learned from her elder sister that her two-storey residence was searched by authorities.

“I thought I will be arrested. I could not eat. During the night, I tossed and turned and could not sleep properly,” she said.

When asked about her past, Santos said she used to collect “tong” or money at a gambling den in Naga City and left Cebu for Pampanga to work in a bar.

She was 20 years old at the time and endured everything so she and her family can eat. But Santos didn't have any regrets.

“I'm not ashamed of my work because it was where I got to eat delicious food, earned money, and assist my family here. When I worked in the bar, it was the first time I ate food from Jollibee,” she said.

It was during her stint in the bar that she got the name “Chloe.”

Santos said she hoped that her shady past won't be dragged during the police investigation into the Ellah Joy kidnap-murder case.

“I don't care about the sins that I committed. I'm crying because other people have been affected by what is going on now, especially my family,” she said.

As it is, her rags-to-riches story came to a grinding stop after she and Griffiths were linked to the murder case.

Santos is about to join her Filipino husband and their two children in the US when she and Griffiths were investigated by the police.

Santos said she is anxious whether or not she will be accepted by her husband who already knew about her relationship with Griffiths.

Santos is married to a Filipino immigrant who works as an engineer in the US.

They have two kids aged 10 and seven years old, both of whom are in the father's custody.

Santos temporarily separated from her husband and met Griffiths, a British accountant.

“My family has to endure the fear, humiliation, and sorrow. No amount is worth all these,” she added.

During the interview, an emotional Santos had to be given mineral water to drink in order to calm herself.

She insisted she had nothing to do with Ellah Joy's death.

“Kon nagtago pa ko, niadto na ta ko sa Singapore. Ni-exit nako. (If I had plans to escape, I should have stayed in Singapore and never came back here),” Santos said.

Santos and Griffiths arrived in Cebu at 2:10 pm last Feb. 3 and departed for Puerto Princesa in Palawan at 11:00 am last Feb. 4.

Santos celebrated her 35th birthday last Feb. 5 in Puerto Princesa.

Santos said she and Griffiths went back to Cebu last Feb. 6 and was preparing for a flight to Singapore the following day.

But she said they missed their 7:55 pm flight to Singapore last Feb. 7 because they allegedly arrived late in the airport.

The couple allegedly went back to Santos' residence in Naga where they stayed until Feb. 9.

They managed to book a flight for Singapore and left in the morning of Feb. 9.

On the same day, the body of Ellah Joy was found dead off a cliff in barangay Gibuangan, Barili town.

that shows how slow the brains of our judicial system really works.... usad pagong... sa US pa na or other countries dali ra kau pag hatg ug decision ang judge.. dire sa ato.tambak na ang mga g file nga case... nya wa jud.. as in.... sleeping beauty ra jud sila....even sa mga small cases...
best stupid decision made by them was dropping all charges filed against ping lacson... tards....

Task Force Ellah Joy has keeping it slow this time kay basin masayop nasad sila. Of course, dakong uwaw napud kung mapalpak nasad. As I observed, they find it hard to connect these suspects on the murder case. They need substantial evidences to officially file a case. Though there are certain angles nga makaduda especially the current evidences they have gathered but still its okay as long as makatabang ni pag solve sa case. Hopefully.

Mao unta ni gibuhat ni anhing Digal. Dili kay sobra ra ka hot. Atat na atat unya palpak.
