the problem of education is that people are not taught to think critically. There is what Paulo Friere in his Pedagogy of the Oppressed calls the banking-systerm of education. The teachers "knows it all" while the student must learn from the teacher. Education is not dynamic one learns only what the teacher tells them, and the teacher "isalways right"

the only problem i see is that in our education system, quality education is a privilege for the rich people.

@iloveyou4ever: layas? hmmm.. it's not that easy. most can't even afford quality education here when it's cheaper if compared to those schools abroad.
@baron: aside from your optimistic view. what else can you say? suggest? contribute?
@klavel: why'd u say that DepED is the most deprived gov't unit? any statistics?
@bcasabee: i don't think hiring a katabang to teach your child is a good idea. this will have a psychological effect on the child. his/her social abilities might suffer co'z he/she won't be able to mingle with other children found in schools. plus the ability to deal with pressures, etc...

i think ladderized education system is a good initiative by the government and it really might help the less fortunate students...

Education starts from the home. Education need not be expensive, I've seen lots of achievers from public colleges and universities, and they don't even have to be rich. Naa ra gyud na sa tawo ang maninguha, and don't blame it on the education system. Sa una wala pa ma uso ang tv, nganong daghan man kaayo ug achievers, in the 1960's and 70's the Philippine Educational system has been regarded as one of the best in Asia, nganong karon lain na man? Kinahanglan gyud nga ang mga ginikanan mo tudlo sa ilang anak unya dili na lang ila-um ang tanan sa maestra.

Here in Singapore, its a different story, students here are really driven by their parents to really study hard. Maghikog ang uban kung mahagbong ug kon dili maka achieve. They also have the best education system here, but that is only secondary, like in my first statement, the first teachers are the parents..

I agree with Kolz, I've heard it also that Singaporean students lead on the top-ranked students based on the latest evaluations. And it's true parents should be the first teachers, guides, mentors, motivators, whatever... parents are responsible for their kids behavior, then school teachers. Well, some cases, though, children took different paths despite the parents' right/wrong guidance.

I am observing the way of education here in Korea also, a fast growing country, it's having similar parents' attitude towards their children with Singapore and Japan. They push them to the limit. And believe it or not, high school students here stay until 11PM at school. to study, study, and study, always, on weekdays and sometimes on weekends. It's too much though, but we're not even quite close. too lax...

I don't blame it to the computers and televisions or techty stuffs these days... they can be very useful depending on how we use them. Disiplina lang sa kaugalingon siguro. they can affect very seriously if they are misused.

But these days, what I see apparently is that Filpinos are rapidly losing discipline, it's too loose; government laws, school rules, and even within the family... or church. it's an abuse of freedom...it's becoming so pathetic.

If only parents of these present generation aimed to make their kids learn more and better or even the best there is, the end of the tunnel is not far us, Filipinos. The Government should focus much on education, it's the mould of our kid's future -- Philippines' future. Parents should push their children to study. Poor and rich alike. And teachers should teach the students the best they could share not for "money" but for the country-- Philippines. We won't grow by keeping what we know, it's by sharing the best we know for our country's sake.

Sacrifice! Is there anyone willing? --for the sake of the country and of God. May God help us! I love my country!

it's true that education starts from the home. It's also true that education doesn't have to be expensive BUT the point i'm driving at is that quality education is expensive. that's reality. even public colleges and universities are expensive. It's obvious co'z even rich people go to these schools to get quality education. How can you get quality education if you end up with schools that don't have the right resources and equipments to aid its goal in providing quality education? Or if students can't afford to get hold of quality study materials and tools? What if students end up with so-so teachers? Yes, there are achievers that aren't rich.. but do you know the ratio between those rich people who are achievers and those poor ones? I bet only a handful of poor people manages to end up as achievers and that's only because they have parents or relatives that do a lot of sacrifices to support them. That could be a good motivation for some of those poor yet smart people.

hmm.. do you want filipino students to commit suicide if they don't end up as achievers? pls don't compare our youth with those in Singapore. If that's really what happening there don't you think it's scary? Suicides plus declining birth rate? that could really be a big problem @ Singapore and to think they have the best education system. I don't think that promoting immigrants is the best solution if a country has the best education system. I think they should tell their citizens the importance of building up a family. Basic values.

So having said that. i could still say the we have a problem with our education system. Co'z if we don't have that, the gap between the rich and the poor won't be increasing co'z Filipinos won't have a hard time getting a decent job as an employee or as an entrepreneur. FIlipinos would know how to be responsible parents and the effects of not having a good family planning won't be so hard for them to understand.

Education in our country is really poor. Educational Institutions are after for the revenues generated by WHAT's IN courses. Sad to say that some teachers in the universities are not that expert enough to teach students. Labaw lang ug usa ka page sa study sa mga students. Someare fresh graduates deretso deployed to teach college students. Even some dont have masterals degree. I appreciated those who are performing wellbut sad to say nga maapil sila sa kabati sa education system if these problems are emerging. nag-sulputan na maayo ang mga Nusring Courses, i just hope that what theyre teaching really is competitively enuf for the industry standards.. some mahilig sad kaau ug passang awa ( no offense ). hahay kapait.. some are teaching subjects which are way behind to whats really is hot in the industry..pastilan...

I did my Primary and High School in Pinas and here are the 2 main things I really hated:

    -Primary/Elementary years
I studied in a public school & I really hated it when mo bwisita and mga dagkung ta-e sa DECS sa amo school sa-una. Pagawason dayun mi to water the plants, clean the school surroundings, or mang-guna. W-T-F!!!!? Gi pa-eskwela ko sa mga parents nako to learn academic stuff. Not household chores, I can do that at home.

    -High School Years
Went to a private school this time around but my God were the teachers sooo By-the-book. From small quizes to final exams... every question, every enumeration were from the text book. How boring is that? We weren't taught anything bout thinking outside the box. So it wasn't bout being intelligent. Kung naning kaayo ka mag memorize og nonsense/useless materials, then you pretty much get the Valedictorian medal.

@cebutech, i don't have stats to prove but we often hear and see it in media..we have public schools w/c are unfortunately, in dire need of resources...Though some might say that DepEd has been alloted with larger budget compared as to some gov't. units...It is not still enough...We spent most of our early lives in school and fortunate are those who made it big even with little resources. But how about those kids who are slow learners and not well-off? They really require good teachers for those.
