Basically primitive people observed foreigners arrive in their land during wartime. The foreigners constructed landing strips so supplies could come in for distribution to other islands. When the war was over these strips were abandoned and the indigenous people went to investigate. They mimicked the actions and sounds which they observed from the radio operators believing that the great bird god would return carrying with it boxes of treasure as it had for the foreign people.

That was their religion, waiting for the return of the great bird god better known to you or I as an airplane. They thought they had witnessed divine magic. Truth was they simply couldn't comprehend the situation.
