Cebu's Young Architects

I beg to disagree that young architects can't create their own names.
With proper mind-setting and a good system, IT CAN BE DONE.

I became a real estate developer at a young age.

As I visit the exhibit at Ayala & saw the works of art of USC ARki studs and realize what is actually practiced locally...I feel such a waste of talent.

Only in USC bro, Go visit other architectural schools in cebu you'll see there is a big difference in training that is why architecture was compared to a draftsman because of the training in CIT that you have to be a good draftsman to become an architect( or something to that effect). in UV is a different story too so as to USP. USC is the only architecture school in cebu that teaches Architecture the way it should be. example in USC they will not accept 1 regular apartment building as thesis how much more if 3 person will work on it, while in CIT and UV before it is accepted. Unless you will convince the panel that your proposed apartment has something new architectural system not design, then USC panel will accept it as thesis for 1 person.

...if you're a young architect and you're planning to establish your own name this early... you need three things - field experience, influence and an extreme amount of connections (rendering / presentation skills don't even count).

@cirext Bro, I didn't say that it can't be done...It can be done but you need the three things I've mentioned above... and those things aren't learned in the University. Ironically bro, the path of success for an architect isn't really equivalent to a real estate developer. It's a long and painful road ahead.

Yes, it's a waste of talent. Might as well make money elsewhere (abroad) where the pay is good and services are properly compensated.

when i was in elementary..i have decided that i want to take up architecture. i even design buildings and houses at a high school coz it became my obsession....i even spent like much time thinking about the designs and plans..

However, we dont have much funds for it...so in College i decided to take up Management instead and its a scholarship..


Now im working and also employed..i really wanted to take Architecture coz i think its my niche and my passion....any advises..? Im 26 and i thought that its too late for me....

you connot compare arki studs and qualified arki's, students design with no boundary. they can draw the wilds they can imagine and wont worry a thing. qualified arkis in the other hand, has a big responsibility.

It's not yet too late for you. If it's your passion, then go right ahead. My suggestion would be for you to work abroad (in a big architectural firm) if you're given the chance. Architecture Professional Practice in the Philippines is not that much of a "respected work".

Some architects in here may sound like they have accomplished this and that but If you look at it closer...some even resort to more "drastic measures" to get a project sealed or even to get proper compensation. My advise, don't get your hopes too high, you'll only get disappointed. People in the Philippines are not yet educated on what architects do or how much their rates should supposedly go.

Yes, in the high-end market...you'd get the exact rates since "most" of them (like less than 1% of the total pop) know the architect's real PF (and that's if you're lucky).

If you cater to middle to upper middle class individuals, that's another story. Sometimes these classes don't realize that the architect is the "head surgeon equivalent" in a medical setting. But unlike the surgeon, the architect doesn't get much respect since as I've stated before "people see them as draftsmen". Most people don't like the idea of paying "this amount" for a piece of paper / blueprint. If you look at it from another view, the physician actually does the same thing with prescription.

And I would have to agree with goriosan's comment. Most young architects now are working abroad to earn decent pay (SG or Dubai). Probably saving up when they establish their own company here in due time.

Not exactly bro but I work in this field.

Truer words have never been said. Yes, Rendering skills doesn't count.I know renderers who are very good at their craft but that's just it. Only the elite pay architects their real worth. For some Middle class clients and below, expect to be low balled as you appear to be only drawing something in a piece of paper, something a draftsman or a college grad can do. The bulk of the money goes to the contractor who visibly makes the building stand up.

Its true, most young architects who desire a decent pay go to SG and Dubai -its a no brainer. Its funny coz, most engineering graduates i know have goals in working for big, multinational companies, While the Arki grad's goal is to create his own design firm. Some engineers may earn decently being employed, however for architects on the other hand, it can be very difficult to create your own firm at a very young age with poor pay (no savings).

Despite that, if you are in the right situation, Architecture can still be very fulfilling career.

im 24 and i just passed the architecture board exam last june 2010, since i was in grade 4, architecture is my passion, i draw houses in elevation inspired by my dad's magazine and our house that was renovated. i graduated in cit-u, after graduate I took apprenticeship for 2years and then take the exam.
bcoz i dont want to have a boss, i decided to be a private architect, i have my clients thru d help of connections but sad to say the standard fee for architects is not follow here in phil., if u told them that ur pf is in percentage, they will not sign the contract bcoz its too expensive for them.
if i depend my income as an architect here, it will not sustain my needs, thats why I decided to have my own business, it's also my passion, hearing the word "NAHALINAN" is like pasta to me.

architecture is a dream come true to me. even though i dont have a stable project yet, my parents still very supportive to me, they always told me to learn how to wait, be hopeful and positive.

basta if u really want to be an architect, go! follow ur dream, kong nkaya nko as an autistic kid b4, samot na mo. its all the d mind,what u think is who u become, always.

Nothing is too late... Its not in my language bro.
Im 29 now bro & Im taking Architecture as my 2nd course after my Engineering board 8 yrs ago.
