Despite always being a big OpenGL supporter, John Carmack in new interview said that Direct3D is better API than OpenGL is, mostly thanks to the jump Microsoft did with D3D10, rendering it completely incompatible with D3D9 and earlier.

He also mentions, though, that they at iD will continue to use OpenGL for their games.
Considering that John Carmack has jumped the shark from PC to Console to iPad/Pod bullcrap gaming, yeah they'll still do a lot of OpenGL. Anything that starts with an 'i' doesn't have the DX API.

JC has been praising the mobile gaming idiocy lately. While they are truly technological leaps, I just find it funny that JC has sold out completely away from his roots.

Although I agree with the fact na DX10-11 had a real leap in their API. This is why we're still about to see the real power of DX10-11. Most devs are still stuck on how to develop things in DX9 and still have to learn how to implement stuff on DX10-11 because of their huge differences.

Personally I'm not bothered with this, but I'm more happy to embrace it (as a developer and a gamer). Most of the games I like to play are running on OpenGL anyways.

But with Microsoft's urge to kill DX, well...

Maybe you're right. But before the golden era of voodoo (not voodoo exclusively), gpu makers were cramming on getting OpenGL to work properly on their GPUs. A deja vu may happen considering the focus on DX is finished.

I can still remember the days when my S3 Trio can't handle OpenGL in CS 1.3 so I had to use software

@siop - kanindot atong voodoo. init lang kaayo ug ang cards tag-as pa sa 5970 (even though they were not released)

under a business perspective lisod ani wagtangon ang dx / api

personal computers = NEVER ENDING UPGRADE = new hardware manufactured

if controlled environment sagpa kaau sa hardware manufacturers.

lets say game developers will optimize ALL GAMES for a specific video card lets say 9800gt, wala nay market ky makontento na ang pc user sa video card since optimized na ang graphics for that card.

well... kinsa man ang mag push manufacture new hardware ky ang software development man.
system requirements taas na for the next game developed. so manufacture na pod bag.o na hardware. unending consumers buying upgrades para kaapas sa system requirements sa game.

Actually daghan ang pildi if DX is going into a full stop.

Pildi ang Microsoft, why PC Gaming is still alive is because of DX. DX is a selling point. Imagine if most games were running on OpenGL, good God that's a Linux nerd haven. And not just for Linux nerds, but for Mac hipsters too! Gamay nalang ang mamalit ug Windows except for the less literate ones.

Pildi ang game devs. Kung hait ka sa DX but suddenly you have to shift to OpenGL because the market is not fit for DX games assuming OpenGL has evolved a mile away from the dead DX, a developer has to learn OpenGLs syntaxes and conventions although OpenGL is much easier to code on.

Sort of pildi ang hardware makers pero the demand will stay the same as long as people will play games. Like what earlz said, if gpus focus on GP-GPU, GPUs will not only serve as a gaming piece but also for different usages (i would more likely use GP-GPU to crack hashed passwords).

This console vs PC war is getting old. Every week, month, year it is rehashed. People need to stop worrying what powers what and play more. There was a time when I used to be on the PC fanboy ... but no longer. The only games I play on the PC are the strategy games such as Civ 4 or Tropico 3. I got tired with all the arguing and my PC is better than your PC long ago. I've moved to consoles for most of my gaming ... and am still having loads of fun. Isn't that what gaming is about? ... fun? When will you guys learn that it's not about what graphics are prettier? When will you guys learn that it isn't about how many speakers you have? PC fanboys make me feel like a sad, sad panda. More gaming, less talking please.
