    This is the classic reason why poor and uneducated people NEED religion and need God to exist.

    Religion frankly is just a social means of control. It takes many different forms but the purpose of it is to control the people and bring some order. In other countries and cultures, religion takes the form of superstitious beliefs in gods and other deities. In more advanced cultures, religion has faded away to be replaced with government and rule of law. In short, religion is just one of the many tools of social order. Religion is also a handy tool for colonization as our history shows.

    To answer your question.... the point of doing good is simply to treat others the way you want to be treated yourself.

    We don't do bad to others because we ourselves dont want this to be done to us.

    The point of doing good IS because it IS good. That's what religious people have problems comprehending.

    Thats why religious people are WEAK>.. they rely on God for them to do good.

    crims has an issue. and since it was a provocation rather than a question, then i surmise it does not need a reply.

    @clinically dead,
    but thats the issue, how do we explain our intention to do good? As much as some folks would say that religion is merely created for social control, the notion of good may also fall in the same category, that it is merely ideological according to the current situation. To say to do good for the sake of its ownself, (deontological, i.e., duty ethics) is ok, but i am with the conviction that it is empty. because duty, to do good for its ownsake, implies an obligation to do such an act. But who are we to obligated to, or to what are we obligated to? hence empty.

    @vip2x,

    poor and uneducated people. yes there are alot of them here. dont associate yourself with them. As i said, religion may be ideological, but the notion of good may also be ideological. Religion is indeed a handy tool for colonization, such is why we are now civilized. That is why we enjoy the toilet, the spoon, the fork, the tv, because of this.

    the government and the rule of law does not necessarily contradict religion, as if they are in separate poles.
    states with advance culture sees not the fading of religion, but rather, sees a fruition of a new kind of religion that is proper to the level of that culture. Not all religious people are weak, because the recognition of God's existence may also be gauge of depth. the recognition of one's limitations, hence, he is tempered by humility.

    Unlike the others, who flaunts arrogance, yet commits fallacies here and there. They are not only confused about God, or about the argument, they are, more importantly, confused on their own situation.

    I think 'empty' is a better description to 'doing good out of obligation to someone/something' than to 'doing good for the sake of doing good'.

    Saying that we are obligated to do good makes it seem like we are somewhat being forced to do so. It's like: "I don't really feel like doing it, but I'm obliged by my religion so okay, fine".
