    There are very few Linux viruses because the filesystem makes it difficult for viruses to replicate on a Linux system. The design of Windows, on the other hand, makes it ridiculously vulnerable to viruses. The Linux antivirus software is usually for spotting WINDOWS viruses on servers so that they are not transmitted to Windows systems from a Linux system. Windows viruses CANNOT execute on a Linux system.

    Any system can be hacked, however.

    So I guess it is safe not to install any anti-virus in Linux, I don't like my system to slow down just because an anti-virus is running, according to PC World the Norton Anti-virus in Windows can slow down the system up to 13%

    @javapenguin

    go ahead install an antivirus program in your linux box, (F-secure for Linux for example) dont worry, antivirus apps for linux is NOT like as what you see in WIndOw$, it's more like "on demand" , meaning it really does'nt run in backround so it won't hog system resources... but when you browse window$ based boxes thru samba network, the antivirus apps ACTIVATES....

    it all boils down to preferences ... as for me since RH6.2 (2000) my desktop was never compromise by any trojan or viruses.

    if u not aware how to tighten the security of ur linuxbox dont run any services like httpd, ftpd, mail, etc. blah blah blah bcoz even linux encouter a virus/troj. like troj/t0rn-kit, troj/rootkit-a, linux/osf-a, troj/linsniff-a, troj/sshd22b. but f u want to explore linux for reasearch, dont install any anti virus/firewall and simply run all services and u will see.
