Monique Rae: Cebuana Pop-Rock Sensation | Totally Cebu
Monique studied at Cebu International School from kindergarten up to grade 8. First year high school, she transferred to PAREF Southcrest in Cebu and finisthed the rest of her years in Manila. At present she is attending De La Salle University, majoring in Psychology.
Her mom being the lead singer of the Zee Band was a big influence to Monique. Her singing debut was in a Christmas program at Cebu International School at the age of 7. After that, she performed in most of the school activities. When her mom went solo as an artist, Monique guested in most of her shows.
At the age of 11, Monique played the lead role in the musical, Oliver! , performing both matinee and evening shows at the Ayala Cebu Cinema.
At the age of 14, she was a part of a weekly tv variety show, Sabado na Gyud at ABSCBN Cebu. She did hosting, singing and dancing.
In 2004, Monique did a single featuring K9 in a locally released album called Mango Pop in Cebu. The song “Feels So Good” was the favorite in the album and enjoyed the most airplay. Incidentally, some of the other artists in that album were Cueshe and Dice and K9.
March 2004, she moved to Manila as she just won the Studio 23 Nationwide VJ Hunt and worked as a VJ for the summer. That same year she was a finalist for the show Trip Kita, sponsored by Colgate and ABSCBN. After that summer, she was chosen as one of the Palmolive Perfect 10 models. In August she did a commercial for Wilkins Distilled water.
January 2006, guitar player and musical director Jon Jon Castañeda put together a band with these respected musicans – Gino Cruz & Wowee Posadas on keyboards, Jerry de leon on bass & Tony Granados on drums.
Backed up by these high caliber musicians, Monique has performed at 19 East and Café Lupe doing solo and back to back shows with MYMP, Nikki Gil, Paulo Santos, Nina, The Company, Nyoy Volante, Rivermaya. & Bamboo. She’s done standard jazz shows at Merk’s with some of the best jazz musicians in the country. Also, several corporate shows.
Her repertoire includes her original songs off the album “All up to me” and covers from Alanis Morisette, The Corrs, Plumb, Norah Jones, Allison Krauss, Michelle Branch, Brittney Spears, Frente, Sixpence and Vanessa Carlton to name a few. In addition to these pop rock songs she also does some classics from the Beatles, Madonna, James Taylor and Cyndi Lauper. Monique also plays the guitar on a few songs.
