Nokia will be able to customize 'everything' in Windows Phone 7, but likely won't -- Engadget

Stephen Elop, in his financial and strategy briefing continuing Nokia's marathon Capital Markets Day, just posed an interesting rhetorical question: will Nokia be able to "customize everything" on Windows Phone 7 in order to differentiate itself? "Yes!" was Elop's ebullient proclamation, though he quickly pulled it back to say that Nokia likely won't make extensive use of this freedom to tailor Microsoft's OS. Instead, the company will be cautious and seek to maintain compatibility rather than pushing the boat out too far in tweaking the underlying software. That's a major shift for Microsoft, who forbade HTC from skinning Windows Phone 7 with Sense, something the Taiwanese company would surely have loved to do, and limited it to the introduction of a self-contained Hub. Now Nokia's saying it -- perhaps exclusively -- has been given the liberty to play around inside WP7 to its heart's content. We'll see how important that turns out to be whenever Nokia delivers its first device bearing its new smartphone OS. An insider tip tells us the current plan is to introduce such a handset by the end of 2011, potentially on current hardware. Who's ready for Xbox Live on the N8?
IMHO, aside from adding customized launchers like HTC's sense, nothing much can be done on the WP7 as of now.

I actually thinks it's a great move for both companies. Nokia gets a good modern mobile OS, Microsoft gets a decent phone hardware manufacturer which by the way still makes great phones (from a hardware perspective).

Yes I know we all wanted Nokia to go Android which they should have done so long time ago but they didn't. And if they do now, the Android phone market is already saturated right now that they will have to battle it out with other phone manufacturer's out there that already makes great Android based phones (eg. Samsung, HTC, Motorola). They needed a point of difference, WP7 could give them that. It's a risky move, but in business you have to make some tough decisions.

At the end of the day, this can only benefit us customers. More choices, more innovation, more cool stuff.

better compared to symbian OS nila..

Pero simple ra sad au na nobody in the right mind would waste money to buy something that they cannot really fully use.

it can't be that bad, at least they finally dumped Symbian along with some Fins for top-notched software gurus for them to compete in the long run with iOS and Android. I've been dreaming of this partnership since the iPhone came out and now finally a reason to buy a Nokia again.
