communism will never be popular as long as the people of this country enjoy the fruits of a democratic society. but communist movement will never cease as long as unjustices and inequality exist.

NPA child assassins refuse to kill

At first glance, Anthony, Tonyo and Pedro look like ordinary teenagers from Palawan.

But behind the innocent faces and smiles is a deadly secret. The three are former soldiers of the communist New People"s Army (NPA) who have undergone rigid training in jungle warfare and firearm techniques.

Tonyo, 16, showed ABS-CBN Bandila how he could dismantle and reassemble an M-16 rifle in three minutes. He also boasted that he could shoot a can of sardines 30 feet away.

Reports of NPA recruitment of child soldiers are not new. In 2004 the London-based Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers said a total of 122 boys and 50 girls below 18 were captured working for the NPA as "combatants, courier, guides, medics or spies."

The NPA, however, denies recruiting children and that those below 18 who want to join are assigned "non-combat" tasks including helping in cultural programs and teaching.

Tonyo says he was only 12 when NPA guerrillas recruited him in 2003. After a year, he was acknowledged as a bonafide member of the communist insurgency.

He even showed a tattoo that signified his membership in the group.

Anthony, 14, and Pedro, 15, are not yet full-fledged members since they are just recent recruits.

Despite their youth, the three soldiers were given their first assignment last month.

Tonyo said an NPA leader identified as "Commander Alex" gave them firearms and a mission -- to kill a certain Val Crispin and his entire family.

Crispin, a former NPA guerrilla, was suspected to have become a military agent after abandoning the insurgency.

Instead of carrying out the order, the three boys reported the plan to the Crispin family and surrendered themselves and their firearms to authorities.

The three boys dream of going back to school. However, they also fear that their former comrades would seek revenge for their decision to turn their backs on the life of a child assassin.

The insurgency problem in the Philippines was borne out of poverty, inequality & social injustice. Unless, the gov't. addresses the root of the problem, it can NEVER eradicate the insurgency issue.

Akbayan is a pseudo leftist party. The AFP even campaigned for them in the last election. Their main function is to roil the waters of public opinion. It is headed by Ricardo Reyes, a former Politburo member who is now working for the gov't.

Hi bud and juan!.. I for one don't believe that Akbayan is a pseudo leftist and the allegation that the AFP campaigned for them last election is a blatant lie and baseless allegation. Akbayan won last election because the people know who's doing his/her job in congress. Setting aside your personal biases and without looking into the personallity and the party she (eta) represents, if the NPA extorts money, its A CRIME!

    talsik...

define Politcal Group and an Organize Syndicate.

Then what are the laws that are bounded between them.

In Danao City last election, the AFP printed streamers that demonizing the other party list groups esp the left leaning one, if AFP consderd AKBAYAN as one of the leftist then why they were not included? Something fishy? or personalay lang, o d kaha wa nalang nasulod sa streamer.

Anyway, this issue is not the first and not the last of Etta, well, Etta and the other persona that are considered as Rejectionist, are now the running propaganidist dogs of the GRP...ingun ana ra na, ato lang tan-awun kinsa ang minglaban sa ilang prinsipyo og kinsa lang ang mibaligya sa ilang prinsipyo.

I dont care if Etta will file a case against NPA, it is also her duty as a citizen, usahay lang makiki ride on lang bah. But it is not only the case that are filed against the NPA, there are plenty of them anyway.

^Indeed, the government should have been addressing the root causes of the problems. That is also the main reason why the government implemented pro-poor program and an intensified campaign against graft and corruption.

The government, however, cannot neglect the fact that the presence of the NPA in the countryside brought about all sorts of extortion and abuses to civilians. There is also the need to protect and ensure the safety of the people in the area. Hence, the need to implement an all-out war against the rebels.
