If you are trying to connect via WAN... you need to setup your Router that will redirect your connection to MySQL (internal IP), known as "Port Forwarding". or you can install WebServer, such as IIS/APACHE.

another question is, if you're already trying to sell your program, there is the question of operating system cost. customers always go for open source operating system now a days, windows cost 7T+ per terminal, imagine if they are running on a 50PC+ in their office.
try to create a cross platform application.
i heard about this project from SUN - JAVA called project Semplice.
it enables visual studio / visual basic codes to be ported to JAVA thru netbeans plug-in, similar interpreter so similar codes, i lost track of the project though.

OT: You can always have web apps as your options. You will only need to manage one machine (server). Client machines always have a browser installed.

You can either use ODBC or MySql Client for .NET.

1. Download MySql Client dll.

2. Add the dll to your project.

3. Add connection string to web.config
