Too bad this had happened. Would tourists want to attend a violent fiesta?

During Lapu-Lapu City fiesta: Amok hurts 7, is shot by cops

The Lapu-Lapu City fiesta celebration in honor of the Virgin of the Rule (Birhen sa Regla) turned bloody when a man ran amuck and started hacking people in barangay Poblacion yesterday leaving eight, including himself injured.

One of the victims is still in critical condition and is now confined at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City.

The suspect was identified as Rosalio Tariman, 22 years old and a native of barangay Aurora Tinago, Zamboanga City, but presently staying in Lapu-Lapu City. He does not, however, have any permanent address as police said that Tariman sleeps on the sidewalks of their city.

Tariman was also hurt in the incident as quick-acting policemen shot him twice to stop his carnage. He is now confined at the Cebu City Medical Center, but was first brought to the VSMMC.

The police said that the suspect was sitting along the road near the city auditorium when he suddenly took out an 11-inch knife and started hacking people at Plaza Rizal, which is just outside the church.

PO1 Archie Borres and PO1 Roel Pelones, who were detailed in the area to help secure the people, rushed to the area where Tariman was and tried to stop him.

The suspect refused to heed the policemen and instead went for them with his knife.

Pelones tried to get the attention of Tariman while Borres maneuvered to the area behind the suspect.

When Tariman tried to lunge at Pelones, Borres shot the former twice hitting him on the back.

The policemen then handcuffed Tariman and brought him to the hospital. He is out of danger.

The victim, who is in critical condition, was identified as Felicita Makalipay, 60 years old and a resident of V. Rama Ave., Cebu City. She was in the area to sell ice drop.

Makalipay was still undergoing surgery as of late afternoon yesterday but was already in stable condition.

The others who sustained injuries were identified as Rosita Gilig, 56 of Sta. Rosa, Olango Island; Roel Cerencio, 26 of sitio Salvage, barangay Looc; Andrecia Sumalinog, 38, sitio Ilaya, barangay Marigondon; Lorry Caņete, 33, Puso Center, barangay Mactan; Bebelyn Amabao, 26, Bakilid, Mandaue City; and Jeffrey Vargas, 35.

The other victims are also confined at the VSMMC.

PO3 Discoro Arong of Lapu-Lapu City Police Station said that Tariman suddenly shouted "akong pamatyon kay nay planong mupatay sa akong ginikanan."

The people who frequent the area said that Tariman suffered a nervous breakdown and has been known to hang out in the park and sleep there at night.

Lapu-Lapu City Police Office director Sr. Supt. Mariano Natuel, Jr. told The FREEMAN that he will request the Police Regional Office (PRO)-7 to give a commendation to the two policemen for their bravery.

He said it is not also necessary to confiscate their service firearms as part of the investigation as they were only responding to a call of duty.

Default "Cebu: A Top Tourist Destination" such a tag line is a big joke!

Cebu's tourist promo seems to have deceived a lot of foreigners. In fact I have one disappointed foreigner friend. Most of the foreigners I meet outside the Phils - Japanese, Americans, Indians, Indonesian even Sri Lankan have heard nice things about Cebu. And when I am asked of what's nice in Cebu, I am always at a loss of words for I feel they have wrong expectations of what Cebu is. I want to be proud for Cebu but is there any other Cebu destinations/attractions to be proud of? Well, there are nice beaches in Cebu but one has to take a long drive to reach them. Such beaches are even common to many islands in the Phils, even nicer like the beaches in Boracay, Panglao, Palawan etc.

You may push for Plantation Bay, Imperial Palace, Shangri-la... come on, those are not Cebu! They are beautified parts of Cebu by private entities that are yearning for income! I dont think they are truly Cebu. Unlike other places as Japan for example where you'll experience breathtaking panoramas, well kept public parks, gardens and temples, and bustling business centers that are truly wonders to behold.

Please share your thoughts on how to improve Cebu and make it truly a tourist haven. Let's hope that this forum can reach our honorable government officials and may this provide them inputs on what and how to improve Cebu.

My issue is I do not agree that Cebu is a top tourist destination simply bcoz there's not much to see and experience in Cebu (Cebu province generally) for regular tourist. I say tourist, I mean regular tourist not adventurist of all ages not just the youth and young adults.

Tourism for me appeals and excites all human senses and should create a resounding "wow". A tour is normally a brief visit thus a place must offer a fulfilling experience packed in a day or few days.

Now, since you have passionately claimed the contrary about Cebu, opposing my opinion, I challenge you to give a Cebu tour itinerary (anywhere in Cebu group of islands) in a day (20 hours) and we'll evaluate the "wow" factor. And let's compare it with a day in Baguio, Batanes or even Bohol (local lang para dli kau dako ang disparity). Cost is non-issue. Cost must not be considered. It must not limit your itinerary.

why a joke? mactan shrine, magellan's cross, sto. nino church, plaza independencia, and other historical landmarks are tourist spots. everytime muvisit kog mactan shrine, manlimbawt gihapon ako balhibo knowing that our filipino ancestors fought for our freedom.

sa kaon, famous pud ang sutukil, lechon, halo2, pochero... many more to mention.

sa pista, sinulog pinaka number 1 na anhion sa taga laing lugar. pista sa opon pud daghan sad mutambong.

sa mga beaches, wa pud ta magkuwang. although you need about a minimum of an hour drive to get to good resorts or public beaches, di man pud ka magmahay. all worth it man pud kay ma-amaze ka sa natural beauty sa lugar.
