I agree that it's okay to be away from your family for a time, but that we have to use that time wisely to save up and invest so we wont have to leave again.
I know this from personal experience. I left my son when he was 6 weeks old. I was away for 7 months in a high paying job. My officemates were staying in condos, with new cellphones, new clothes, rubbershoes, etc. I rented a bedspace in a less-upscale area where I could walk to the office and made do with the clothes I bought from the local ukay-ukay before I left. I saved and saved and saved.
I invested the money I saved. First, in life insurance. Second, in time deposits and mutual funds. That was two years back. Til now, I still save 10% of my income, always thinking of my son's college needs 15 years from now and my own retirement 30 years hence.
I missed his first step and his first crawl. But, our house will be completed next year. And there is money to put my brother to school, and money for my son's school as well.
Oh, and I'm a single mom. With my parents' help and God's grace, I was able to get back on my feet after a dark time in my life. These days, I am reaping the seeds of frugality I sowed before. I may have missed the first step and the first crawl. But, I am teaching him his ABCs and how to swim.
So, hang in there, have a goal, stick to it. And when the time comes that you have achieved it, go home. Coz life is too short to spend away from your family.
I hope this story inspires. Good luck and God bless, catnip23 and all.
