In many ways this is the most important information we have to offer. No matter where you get pierced and under what conditions, proper aftercare cannot be emphasized enough. Even a perfect piercing done under ideal conditions can go nastily awry if not kept clean. And even a safety pin piercing done in your basement (though not recommended) may be salvagable if you know what to do next.
So here are our suggestions. They are not meant to be taken as timeless gospel or mere theories. These recommendations come from our experience healing piercings, brandings and cuttings, and from the experience of many other respected members of our profession. For more information, check out the APP website at
Association of Professional Piercers. We are also always availible if you have questions or specific concerns. You can email or call us, or stop in. It is often difficult to tell what is going on with a piercing without seeing it, so whenever possible, come by in person.
Remember that everyone's body and circumstances are different; cater your actions to your own lifestyle. If you take the time to observe your own body and its healing on a daily basis over time, you will learn what works for you. Beyond that, you will become more aware of the interaction between your physical being and other aspects of your life, such as stress, environment, diet, smoking, exercise, etc. In the long run this leads you to a keener awareness of your health and your own role in your healing.
The information following is based upon our experience as piercers and upon current industry standards. We are not doctors and our suggestions, whether written or verbal, stated or implied, are not meant to be taken as medical advice. In the event of a serious infection or other problem, consult your physician.
