In the purest sense, yes, it is impossible, because there will be irreconcilable differences between the two modes of being.
Human beings will
always feel the need for something mystical and spiritual in their lives, but it's just a stroking/soothing thing, which is why some of those who do apply science and the scientific method in their daily lives, still cannot go about living if they do not undergo the routines and practices of a spiritual or religious person. Feynman states that its the feeling of confusion of not being able to understand something, a fear that tends to push us back into a state far removed from being scientific, into one that yearns for "magical" answers and assurances of why things are the way they are, which falls under the realm of mysticism or spirituality.
While I do say that it's impossible in the strictest sense, it doesn't necessarily mean that I don't think there are people out there who are both scientific and religious/spiritual, because there are, and that's a personal choice for them.
