Metro hotel rooms up by 5.6% in June
    http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?...s04_aug28_2006

The number of hotel rooms in Metro Manila increased by 5.6 percent in June, but occupancy rate went down as foreign tourists chose to stay in the provinces near major beach destinations.

Latest data from the Tourism Research and Statistics Division of the Department of Tourism show that hotel rooms in Metro Manila totaled 13,430 as of June 2006, with average occupancy rate of 66.1 percent.

In comparison, there were only 12,715 rooms, of which 71.1 percent were occupied in any given night a year ago.

Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said the demand for accommodation was now higher at provincial tourist destinations such as Cebu, Davao, Boracay and Palawan.

By category, the 18 deluxe hotels in Metro Manila registered an occupancy rate of 66.3 percent in June, significantly lower than 74.2 percent recorded a year ago.

During the month, the Bellevue Manila had the highest occupancy rate of 86 percent, followed by Makati Shangri-La Manila, with 84 percent and Dusit Hotel Nikko with 82.7 percent.

The average occupancy rate at the seven first-class hotels also fell to 66.6 percent in June this year from 70.9 percent a year ago.

Great Eastern Hotel recorded the highest occupancy rate of 88.6 percent, followed by the Linden Suites with 85.1 percent and Richmonde Hotel with 78 percent.

While occupancy rate at the 38 standard hotels improved to 66.6 percent in June from 65.2 percent a year earlier, that of economy hotels narrowed to 58.2 percent from 59 percent.

In the first half of 2006, average occupancy rate among all types of hotels were still higher at 72.4 percent than 71.4 percent during the same six-month period in 2005.

The Department of Tourism expects hotel occupancy rate in Metro Manila to rise in the coming months, as the fourth quarter, considered as the peak tourism season, nears.

International visitor arrivals to the country grew 10.4 percent to 1.42 million in the first half of 2006 from the 1.286 million arrivals recorded during the same period last year.

IMO, one of the reasons why why they picked Cebu specifically Capitol is because how grand the the Capitol Grounds and the Capitol itself are. It perfectly depicts what Pinoy Dream Academy is all about....a grand launching needs a grand venue....in my own opinion.

Davao companies forge pacts with Taiwanese counterparts
    By Carmelito Q. Francisco

SEVERAL local companies reached initial business agreements with Taiwanese counterparts forged during a trade mission to that country about two months ago. Based on the data from the Department of Trade and Industry, eight companies, including the local government of Digos City, were able to forge agreements with the Taiwan business sector, the discussion of which started when a 15-member trade mission arrived in Taipei on June 18.

Most of the agreements were anchored on the supply of fruits, fresh or with added value, to the Taiwan market, said the report prepared by Trade and Industry Assistant Regional Director Marizon Loreto.

Stargate Enterprises Corp., one of the members of the trade mission, was able to negotiate for a supply of a 20-footer container van of dried mangoes worth P4 million and is still in the thick of negotiation for supply of other fruits like pineapple and papaya and fresh aromatic coconut.

Philippine Fruits International Corp., on the other hand, has been allowed to introduce nata de coco pudding to the Taiwanese market and has been negotiating for the sale of mango puree, pudding and slices. The company that it was negotiating with even promised to visit its plant within the year. Sagrex Foods Inc., has established a tie-up with Dole Taiwan for the distribution of fresh fruits and vegetables, and will even send banana chips to that company within the year.

The company has also started discussion with Jollibee Foods officials for supply of banana chips in their outlets. A company that is into personal care products distribution, Angel Sue Marketing, has also forged an initial product distribution with a Taiwanese company.

Based on the result of their initial discussion, the local company will ship to Taiwan initial product stocks worth P200,000 and that the buyer will also visit the company’s office soon. A Taiwanese company has also ordered for the delivery of about eight metric tons of dried seaweeds worth $11,680 from ZSP Enterprise. Based on their initial agreement, the local company will send product samples before the supply is shipped to Taiwan.

A producer of snack foods, Davao King Snak Food Products Inc., has also found distributors for its products. But the case of Prangel’s Bakeshop was different. The company has ordered baking supply and equipment from a Taiwanese supplier, Taiwan being known as among the countries that are into manufacturing of equipment. The bakeshop has ordered from a Taiwanese supplier a French dough moulder, electric meat mincer and bread slicer.

The local government of Digos City in Davao del Sur, on the other hand, has come up with an agreement with a Taiwanese company that will promote its fruits and vegetables in the Taiwan export market. The city government has also started discussion for possible joint venture with Taiwan companies on food processing.

Earlier, mango industry players considered Taiwan as a possible market for mangoes considering its proximity to Mindanao. Ednar Carlos G. Dayanghirang, chair of the Davao Region Mango Contractors Association, said it would be better for local mango exporters to sell to Taiwan and other Asian countries than consider other bigger markets in the west like the US and members of the European Union because of the freight cost.
