Religion is something man can't live without.... one should have a set of ideals, principles, and guidelines in how one should live... we can erase the names of the present religions...for surely, there will be new ones to replace the old.... many call religion useless... but it provides structure to the common people... people rather be rational and logical about everything...but that is simply wishful thinking.... we say we are our own masters in this life....but we know there are just many phenomena we cannot control...thus the comfort of religion promised us that there is someone watching over us.... many will say "BS, imaginary creature!" but the uncertainty of our end pushes many into the umbrella of religion.... Do i believe in religion? yes to a certain extent..... should the believers and non believers continue to debate their versions of truth? yes.....it's one of the few things that is preventing one from killing the other.... Religion will always exist and it will always be critiqued....

then religion is pretty much like gambling.... putting one's fate on the unknown and unforeseeable..

its ok to give reverence to the gods, but it is foolish to depend on them..

put in other way, "na sa diyos ang awa, nasa tao ang gawa"

very true.... but i am fortunate to have been taught in a different frame of thinking.... I was never taught to depend everything on a Divine Being and i was fortunate enough to understand on my own that i must do what i must do in my capacity as a human being...its only the uncontrollable events in this world that i leave to God... I don't know how others are taught about their faith as i can only speak for myself...

I bumped this thread for the purpose of re-focusing on the topic.

    How does one define 'religion'?

  7. #1087
that depends on the context, but usually, religion refers to institutionalized set of beliefs that necessarily involves a divine or supernatural being or power.

I can't think of any use for it for me personally, but perhaps it's important to other people. I respect their faith so long as they respect my lack of it.

You can believe in God without believing in religion. I think religion has nothing to do with God at all, but more to do with people using God so they can create advantages for themselves. This is how established religion came to be, because Kings wanted to make use of divine right to justify their rule.

I am a Catholic. I am therefore coming from an institution with history before the Webster dictionary even exist, before the modern English language came to be. The definition of religion that found favor among most brilliant minds during this two-millenia of history is the one by Lactantius where religion found its root word from the Latin 'religare' (to bind). In consideration of our fallen nature, religion is the physical expression of binding ourselves back to God.

As the Catholic understanding of religion predated any definition that modern English dictionaries or encyclopedia may give, I am more inclined to accept this definition. With that, one cannot believe in God without practicing any religion. Adoration is the first act of the virtue of religion. Without worshiping the same God one acknowledges, the belief of a God is hollow and unreasonable.

but the foundations of your belief in God is rooted in religion.... any many can exploit religion to his advantage as any man has exploited every other thing in this planet...
