Free Willie or jail Willie?

WE SHOULD not bother ourselves with the legal battle between ABS-CBN broadcast network and its former talent, Willie Revillame. It is their own private war and should not concern us. However, it is turning out to be a battle royal among legal eagles, and the fight in the courts promises to be more entertaining than the TV show that is the crux of all the hullabaloo.

ABS-CBN is represented by The Firm, probably the most famous and feared of all Filipino law firms. Arrayed against it are lawyers from at least six other law firms that Manny Pangilinan’s Channel 5 has hired to represent itself and Willie.

Thus, the fight is now between two giant business conglomerates, the entrenched Lopez family and the emerging MVP group.

What is the quarrel about? ABS-CBN has no one to blame but itself. It created a Frankenstein monster in Willie Revillame to whom it gave the hosting job to its noontime game show “Wowowee.”

“Wowowee” became an instant success with ratings that topped the charts. It became very popular because of the big and easy prizes it was giving away to its audience, not because of its host. But Willie thought it was because of him and this went into his head. So much so that he arrogantly demanded from his employer, on the air, that it fire a fellow talent who was critical of his show. If it didn’t, he threatened, he would resign from the show, implying that without him “Wowowee” would collapse.

This did not sit well with the Lopezes. None of their employees had been this ungrateful before; no one had threatened them like Willie had. Now the monster that ABS had created was biting the hand that fed him. Willie’s career could have ended a long time ago. His vulgarity in ABS noontime shows earned him reprimands, and a suspension from the board of censors, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB). His antics later caused the cancellation of another ABS noontime show. ABS bailed him out of his troubles each time...


The status symbols did not help him in his fight with his employers. ABS sidelined him from “Wowowee” and hired new hosts, then later completely cancelled the show and replaced it with a new one. Meanwhile, the contract with Revillame remains in force; he cannot work for another network while the contract is in force.

Revillame could not wait for the contract to expire. He fired the first salvo. He signed up with ABC-5 then turned around to sue ABS demanding to be freed of his contract.

ABS fired back with a P426-million countersuit for damages, citing Revillame’s breach of contract. With no temporary restraining order issued by the court, Revillame launched his new show with ABC-5 while the case remains pending.

Despite a change in time slot that pitted it against primetime newscasts, the new show “Willing Willie” closely resembled the defunct ABS noontime show “Wowowee.” This led to the latest twist in the ongoing TV saga. ABS sued Revillame and ABC-5 for copyright infringement.

At first Revillame showed contrition, appealing for underdog sympathy. The giant TV network is harassing him, he said. But with the latest case against him, he turned combative. He made sure that someone won a house and lot before the hearing date. He called on his fans to join him in his court appearance, a veiled threat of people power to pressure the court. He even brought with him President Benigno Aquino III’s former girlfriend Shalani Soledad, whom he previously cast as his co-host, for full effect. Like others who are deft in manipulating mass sentiment, the nouveau riche now calls on the poor to support him.

ABS now laments that Revillame stole its hit and sold it to a rival. This explains why ABS is now on a war footing. A businessman will never let even his most pampered employee steal his goods and sell it to a competitor. Even a mere store owner will run after the thief and the fence who bought the goods he knew were stolen.

So should ABS free Willie as he demands? Or would it be more like jail Willie? With the mess that Willie has created, there are rumors that his new network may be the ones to set him free before the reputation of its executives get dragged down the gutter with him.

ilaha gusto ipagawas na gibalhin ra daw ug station ang Wowowee.. ilaha gusto ipagawas na
gi transfer ni Willie ang show to other station.. w/c is BS.. kadako ra deprencia!
