what's the actual size of a 40" tv??

hi guys. don't know if this is the right section for this thread. but anyhoo, here's the sitch. we recently bought a supposedly 40" Sony Bravia LED tv. now, my mom and i were doing some measurements of the living room and we came upon to measure the tv. for the entire length, including the border, we only got 37". we were quite confused since we bought and paid for a 40" tv. i checked the box that came with it and 40" was what's written there. could there have been a mix up or does a 40" tv actually measures 37" only

as what kit_cebu says, measure it diagonally and you'll get 40"... that's how it measures, in all screens..
