    Silliman U tops moot court contest
    Updated as of 11/24/2010 5:24 PM

    MANILA, Philippines - The team from Silliman University in Dumaguete City emerged as champions at the finals of the recent national moot court competition on international humanitarian law (IHL) held at the Supreme Court en banc session hall on November 20.

    It bested 13 other law schools for the top spot in the competition judged by a panel led by Associate Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno and lawyer Harry Roque.

    The winning law team will be sent by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the organizer of the contest, to Hong Kong in 2011 to represent the country in the regional finals.

    Last year's national winner, the team from Ateneo de Manila University, made it as one of the top 5 prosecution teams in the Hong Kong finals.

    "The finalists were very well prepared, and it was a very difficult choice. We hope the winners will do well in Hong Kong—it takes a real character to go in front of the court and argue your points. Our country needs people like that, and I hope one day I will see them in the halls of the Supreme Court again,” said Justice Sereno.

    Fourteen law schools participated in the national finals, displaying their argumentation skills. They are:

    * Silliman
    * Ateneo de Davao University
    * St. Louis University-Baguio
    * Southwestern University in Cebu
    * University of Cebu
    * University of San Carlos in Cebu
    * University of Batangas
    * University of St. La Salle in Bacolod
    * Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan
    * Ateneo de Manila University
    * Far Eastern University
    * Lyceum of the Philippines
    * San Beda College of Law
    * University of the Philippines-Diliman

    The elimination and semifinal rounds were conducted at San Sebastian College in Manila.

    A role-play challenge highlighting IHL was added to this year's competition, simulating practical applications of the law to limit the effects of war. Southwestern University bagged the best team award for the role-play challenge.

    The moot court competition started in 2005 and has been held annually thereafter. It is considered a prestigious event for law students as it is the only moot court competition with finals held at the Supreme Court.

    The contest is held in cooperation with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), the Philippine Association of Law Schools (PALS), and the Supreme Court of the Philippines.

    Just a correction, OGPA is not an organization for SUFA students but an organization of art enthusiasts in Silliman, open to all colleges. Member ko ug OGPA before but only for 1 year during my senior year. Sayang nga short time lang ko na member but I really had fun and learned lots of things.

    We had art exhibits and art sessions. This is an organization founded by the way by Dr. Albert Faurot. Nakahibalo ko sa existence ani nga org during sa Rennaissance Month sa term ni Regal nga gitagaan mi ug special pass nya magabot ra kuno ug usa ka place then moadto sa certain nga lugar. Wala ko kahibalo unsay i expect basta dala lang mi ug lapis ug bond paper. Didto mi nagabot sa Scheide Chapel nya adto diay punta sa Bethel. Mag nude sketching diay. Ang first model unta kay batan-on nga English Teacher, gwapa pero wala na karon sa SU, pero ni back out siya kay daghan man mi kaayo nya na teacher pud nako before, she thought nga very private session. So paabot mi pila ka oras, in the end niabang na lang sila ug burikat. Even though we were students pero we acted as professionals. Walay heckling. Na at ease ra pud siya bisan gikuyawan, according niya mas kaulaw pa daw nga maghubo kay mag "jerbangs". Then finally our last model had arrived, a very prominent campus personality. Guess who? Si Regal. In fairness, wala siya nag atubang, ga talikod lang bare naked. Gi exhibit biya to amo works sa Scheide Chapel nya naa pa gud to photo sessions pero gi erase ra ang mga nawong sa models.

    US Embassy Grants Silliman Access to 20 Online Databases

    The Robert B. and Metta. J. Silliman Library, through its American Studies Resource Center (ASRC), has been granted access to 20 online databases of e-journals and e-books on various subjects by the United States Embassy.

    Students, faculty and researchers can avail of these resources for free at the ASRC on the ground floor of the Library. The topics range from environment, science and technology, business research to English language.

    This development increases the number of online databases at the Library, including a free subscription to the Philippine e-lib granted earlier by the Commission on Higher Education, and two e-books purchased by the Ontario Silliman University Alumni Association.

    Meanwhile, Silliman is also this year’s recipient of The Nippon Foundation book program, “100 Books for Understanding Contemporary Japan.” This was announced through a communication from the International Program Department of The Nippon Foundation to University Librarian Mrs. Lorna Yso.
