I have a friend who has this grand concept about starting "Cebu's very own answer to America's Krispy Kreme" - in short a local donut business.

If there were donuts that have the variety and sweetness similar to those of Krispy Kreme, but with prices lower than that of Gonuts Donuts, do you think locals will be convinced to buy them in the long term?

If it could be at par with Krispy Kreme's quality especially when it comes to taste, it's definitely a very lucrative business. Even if the prices would be the same as Dunkin Donuts or Mister Donut, it will be very good.

The challenge here is to be at Krispy Kreme's quality. Marketing will be easy if it is good.

At this stage, my friend plans to win Cebu's market hopefully before other donut businesses (especially KK) arrive. Dealing with Mister Donut and Dunkin Donuts will be challenging for her for sure and there is that pressure to come close with Krispy Kreme's taste and at the same time selling at prices lower than that of Gonuts Donuts (now no more in Cebu).

She studied how Coffee Dream and Bo's Coffee once shared Cebu as a coffee market before losing it to the big coffee shops that followed - Starbucks, Figaro, Seattle's Best, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.

As for the donut business, KK is the one to be feared other than the already established DD and MD. The Whole Donut (based in Connecticut) is not coming soon to the Philippines any time soon and that's a relief. The global donut biz is apparently "more open".

one thing for sure is i dont mind paying the same price as krispy kreme or gonuts donuts as long as you can deliver the taste not ripping off customers and remember that quality control should be strict
and if you want to open with success be sure the shop would look cool so it can attract customers

Maybe Gonuts Donuts altered their recipe for the donuts in Cebu, or maybe they bought cheaper ingredients to cut costs.

Maybe it would be better to start small by putting up stalls near schools and offices. It would be cheaper that way and at the same time, the market is quite good.

I advised her to avoid ever using "world-class" as long as nothing have been achieved. For me, an achievement on the international or global level is needed in order to justify it.

The problem with many Filipinos is that they abuse "world-class" when it comes to describing themselves, or their offerings, or their feeling good, or that they think the rest of the world is so easy to beat in any competition.

I don't think that it would really matter as long as the quality is good. The two things that really matters to people are: [1] Price, and [2] Quality. If it is affordable and the quality is good, I can assure that the business is going to be good and will have a great potential to grow.

However, the line "world class" would bring more challenge. "World class" is a very strong line and it will draw high standards from people. The challenge is to live up to such line. What if the donuts can't live up to the people's expectations? It might hit the business.

Another thing is that Mister Donut and Dunkin Donuts are world class donut businesses. It will be contradicting to say that world class donuts are now in Cebu since Dunkin and Mister Donut are already operating here in Cebu.

There is a really great market for donuts here in Cebu. Dunkin Donuts and Mister Donut even did very well even though their donuts are somewhat priced a little high than they taste (in my opinion), how much more for a good one yet cheaper.
