Japan thinks the real world should be more like Gundam. Next year, a team of experts from all walks of life will join together to form the Gundam Academy, an academic institution dedicated to bringing humanity into the age of mecha suits, helper robots, and space colonization. It’s time for the Universal Century.

The Gundam Academy is pulling its virtual faculty from experts in the fields of astrophysics, engineering, anthropology, medicine, linguistics, and urban planning. Their intention is to study the lessons and ideas contained in the Gundam franchise to usher in social and technological advances:

Shinya Hashizume, a professor of urban planning and architecture at Osaka Prefectural University, said: “Gundam presents the reader with many challenges that we will encounter. It is vital to begin conducting research into these. Scientific research in Japan desperately needs a flow of new ideas…”

Shinichi Nakasuka, a professor of astronautics at the University of Tokyo and one of the founders of the academy, said: “Studying fiction is an excellent way to get ideas about the future. Scientists often restrict their way of thinking to what they factually know. The comic shows how ordinary people without much deep scientific knowledge can come up with very good ideas.”

Gundam’s mechanized mobile suits in particular have already driven innovation. MIT aeronautics professor Dava Newman's sleek, counter-pressurized BioSuit struck many as Gundam-inspired, as has NASA’s foray into nuclear thermal rocket research.

nindota og matinuod ni sa... although murag padulong naman jud ta didto. Kuwang pajud ang technology karon,, number 1 ang propulsion. unsaon kaha para pas2 mu lihok. Nya sa pagka karon, ang mga robots dili kaayo maneuverable. gotta work on the controls I guess. pero nonetheless, this is something to look forward... kinsa kahay mahimong Dr J?

There are many fundamental engineering and physics challenges and questions to be answered/overcome if we ever are to successfully build one.

One question would be of practicality: one Gundam would need to have extremely sophisticated (and complicated) hydraulics and electronics. One thing we've learned with modern military technology is that the more you put stuff in, the more prone it is to failure (a golden example would be the maintenance and overall flyaway production and maintenance costs of the F-22, F-35 and the B-2 Spirit). The level of expertise and expense needed to even maintain one would be astronomical, way way outstripping the value derived. And we're talking about maintaining an army of these, right? Also, the figure of US$ 742 million for one gundam was definitely pulled out of thin air. A single B-2 spirit stealth bomber is a whopping US$ 2 billion. A US aircraft carrier around US$ 4 - 6 billion. Something as complicated as the gundam would have to be more expensive than that, don't you think?

Next would be the role that this gundam would play in modern warfare. Would it be a tank, a fighter/bomber, or heavy infantry, or all of them? As a tank or heavy infantry, it would suck, as a gundam would be tall, making it an easy target for pretty much anything (RPGs, IEDs, antitank missile, other tanks, close air support aircraft, etc.). As a fighter/bomber? Same problem as being a tank. All of them? Well, look back at reason 1.

Next would be a viable energy source for the suit:

    - nuclear fission reactor (sounds like a very bad idea, we'll have portable Chernobyls everywhere)
    - cold fusion (LOL, don't hold your breath)
    - fossil fuels (fantastic, let's push our CO2 emissions up even further)
    - helium-3 (when we get it in meaningful quantities, maybe, yes)
    - fuel cells (when we improve battery technologies, say, batteries that recharge in 30 seconds and weigh a lot less, why not)
    - perpetual motion machine (umm, well... NO)

I believe a similar but more practical approach to mechanized armor is the concept of powered armor. Look at Avatar, or maybe even Starship Troopers (referring to the novel, not the movie), and Starcraft. They'd be all-terrain, and very flexible. They'd do some heavy lifting, would be extremely durable, and far more affordable. The challenges I listed would still be there, but it won't be as difficult.

That being said, I still enjoy the sight of giant robots battling each other on screen. But I won't hold my breath and wait until it becomes reality.
