... terry bozzio. when you talk about drums, he IS the man. He doesnt play for anybody, he plays ALONE. if you try to listen to his music - it's a different level. He's a one man show. He has pushed the limits of percussion to a whole new dimension. They tried to categorized him, but nobody can. He is not jazz, not rock nor metal. He is Terry Bozzio.
THIS IS THE GUY:
AND THIS IS ALL HE NEEDS:

Simply the best... throw any names out there... and they all want to play like STEVE GADD

Why pamper life's complexities when the leather runs smooth on the passenger seat?
... yep. everybody wants him and MOST wanted to be like him. ( steve Gadd ) But he's into the "conservative" side of things. I've heard his works, it's amazing, but still it's too "earthly". No offense Ez, but i get bored listening to Gadd. He's just too tight and too sounds like a teacher-to-a-student. Fundamentalists.
Bozzio is an alien. He wants the drums/percussion to be an independent instrument and so far he has achieved it.
I credit Bozzio for him being so innovative... original... (just like Trilok Gurtu) .. and like you said, his approach to drumming is out of this world ... but, I find Bozzio too pretentious... and his facial expressions and body language is overly exaggerated... and the fact that he lugs his kit around while sessioning for musicians who does straightforward rock music.... I don't get it.
I've seen him play... doing a clinic and I was about 15 feet away from him. He's impressive, Hell... he's amazing!!! I can tell you that.. but!!! there's nothing he can do that other highly talented drummers can't do either.. I mean, if Steve Smith (who, I think, is the most talented drummer today), Dave Weckl, or Vinnie Colaiuta would sit behind Bozzio's kit, they could replicate all his chops.... but you can never find someone else who can replicate the "Gadd Feel".
--
I guess you can say Gadd's sound is boring... I mean, he plays and serves the music... he makes it a point that he does that, or else he'll lose his job.... he makes the song sound "BEST" without overplaying... without taking the spotlight away from the vocalist... or the lead parts. One of the reasons why Gadd is the most sought-after session drummer EVER.
---
Drummers like Portnoy, Mangini, Donati, Bozzio, Carey, etc... they're really good, highly technical, exceptional, very talented .. yet almost mechanical. But after all that fancy chops... you'd still find yourself going back to those who keeps the groove... the ones who serves the music best.

But i have ECS, i like progression and innovation and something fresh. And Bozzio have all these traits. I havent heard someone played and approached drumming the way he does. Bozzio chose not to be a "servant" to anyone.
.. and in terms of "feel". I love Porcaro's "feel" than Gadd's.
You should watch GADD play jazz, bebop, big band, etc.. `cause he's not really confined to anything when he does those... and he does more than just keeping time. When he does free jazz, daaaaaaamn he really plays the drums.
You really can't compare Gadd to Bozzio... two completely different styles. It would be closer to compare Bozzio to BRUFORD... and I think Bruford started it all.
Porcaro is another great drummer... known for his shuffle feel... although I haven't heard any of his works outside TOTO. I like Gadd's feel way way more than Jeff Porcaro's though. Gadd plays in a deeper pocket (plays a little behind the groove... resulting to his groove sounding really heavy) ... I like drummers who plays a deep pocket. But not taking anything away from Porcaro, I think Jeff is one of the best groove players ever.

.. yeah. agree 100 percent. Gadd and Bozzio is like fire and wate. It's safe to say that Gadd is god as a session musician while Bozzio is god in innovation. the rest are secondary....
.. to be honest, i concur to you saying that Portnoy is one sided, i've heard most his work. From the obvious DT, to LTE, to Transatlantic to jamming with Petrucci's solo album. He only knows one style - but damn he is so good with it.
