Veco apologizes for brownouts

well explained Sanosuke... di gyud ta ka blame sa veco. sama ra gud na ug retailer sa bugas, kung gamay ra ang supply di gyud matagaan ang tanan. ang cebu karon nagkataas ang panginahanglan sa kuryente kai nagka daku ang kumunidad ug nagka daghan ang balay patigayon nga mogamit ug elektrisidad.

Mga pre, nag work ko ug one of the power plants in the visayas... it's true, naa jud power power shortage ang cebu... It's not veco's fault naay FREQUENT rotational brownouts, although depends pod if naay kalit2x nga problema sa ilang equipments like blown or defective transformers, feeders, etc.. pero dili ni ang reason sa frequent rotational brownouts.

Nor it is the power plant's fault, kay each power plant, naa man jud at least scheduled yearly preventive maintenance schedule shutdownm which could last from 20 days or more.. up to 2 to 3 months if naay major problem. If dili mi mag shutdown, it could cause detrimental effects hinoon.

In my personal view, if maka fully online na ang CEDC or Toledo Power, 3 units synchronized to the electric grid, at least ma alleviate ang power shortage sa Cebu and nearby provinces.

Plus, if ma human na ang KEPCO sa Naga, it would really help the Visayas a lot... Because ang Negros-Cebu-Leyte-Bohol-Luzon are inteconnected sa electric grid thru NGCP/ formerly TransCo..

Unless dili pa mahuman ang Toledo ug Naga, then commercial, industrial and other establishments grow in Cebu, we are really in dire need of electricity.

yep, agree ko ani. hapit na mu online ang CEDC unit 3. mga december 15 ang target, basin wala na kaayuy brown out sa cebu.hehe

To summarize it all simply, these are the causes of frequent rotational brownouts:

1. Electric power demand of Cebu and neighboring Visayas areas are increasing, while older and present power plants are deteriorating and in need of scheduled preventive maintenance.

2. After one power plant finished it's scheduled shutdown, another power plant will again do the same, and again, for the rest of the year. A scheduled shutdown of power plants could last from 20 days for normal maintenance, or it could arise to 2 to 3 months if major problems are found. (ex. burned generator, turbine blades broken, transformers needed overhaul)

3. Instantaneous or unscheduled power loss cannot be avoided, maybe due to the power plants, NGCP, or VECO, but these said interruptions can be corrected within 10 to 20 minutes if the causes are not severe. So these are not the cause of frequent brownouts.

4. The solution to the frequent rotational brownouts? The full operation of CEDC and KEPCo. which can go fully synchronized to the grid, possibly by 2012-13, these figures are not accurate although.


To those non technical persons, why there is a need for VECO to have rotational brownouts is to maintain the frequency of electric power grid... Normal frequency is 60 Hertz, for the power plants, the speed of the turbine or generator prime mover is at 3600 revolutions per minute, and for some is 1800 rpm.

The more demand there is, the frequency will drop, 60-59 Hz, may be... Its the same if the more water demand from MCWD, and no additional source of water, the less the pressure of water (remember katong El Niñ0?) we have in our household.

The problem for electricity, if the frequency of the grid is not maintained, if it will drop below 58 Hz, our electric appliances will be damaged or worse, beyond repair.

In our power plants, our turbines are designed for a specific frequency. If the frequency will drop, our turbine blades will encounter thermal and mechanical stresses, and endure high vibration... and it could damage the blades.

That's why, if the frequency will begin to drop, VECO will load shed, or cut a certain area of electricity for a given period, and after that period, if the demand is still high, they will rotate the load shedding to another area...
