You have to forgive the guy. It's his first time organizing an event like this.

Then there are the greats like John Sykkes, Vanhalen, Slash, Kirk, Zakk Wylde, Dimebag, Buckethead and the rest on almost everybody's Guitar God list. Yet all of them are considered to have soul. A sense of melody would make this "soul" more of a practical skill rather than JUST having it.

Calling it JUST soul makes it unreachable and unavailable to every musician (which it actually isn't) and I'm guessing, as a fellow guitarist, you don't want to put down the newer generation of guitarists right (kinda the point of the competition)?
That's just it. I just used the term "soul" because I can't find a suitable term/word/equivalent for it. Some call it "heart," some call it "soul," some even call it "feel." Each guitarist you mentioned has their own style/identity. But there is something in their playing that you know it's there but you just can't put a finger on it. I know you're a guitarist and I'm pretty sure you know what I'm talking about. And no, it is never in my nature to put ANY guitarist down. We all have been guitar n00bs when we started.

Having soul which everyone likes shouldn't be what we're going for as guitarists (unless you're only in it for the money). Why else do most guitarists hate Justin Bieber, Jonas Brothers and grow tired of Canon Rock? It's views like this that make pop culture and forces others to say "You should sound like this guy because he's good". Now playing something that is in sync with another person's sense of melody COINCIDENTALLY, that's real music magic but admit it, it's all music theory, a sense of melody and originality and how it's all put together that defines a good musician. Not this other worldly voodoo. Art isn't mysterious and shouldn't be treated as such. The artist, on the other hand, is. We have different views so I won't be surprised if what I've typed isn't to your liking and apologize before hand if you're offended in any way.
Different strokes for different folks. I've always lived by the "to each his own" philosophy so no offense taken there, man.

I totally agree. I'm also totally against music competitions as well but since the organizer is a college buddy of mine, I'm doing this for him as a favor. The real reason I wanted to do this is to meet the newer generation of guitarists and perhaps make new guitarist friends.

I'm hoping to see you there, man. Maybe we could jam at some point after the competition. You don't want the hot rocker chicks waiting.

Nothing says "I'm a badass rocker" like a picture with a bottle of beer, a semi-bald cut and THE COLOR OF ONE'S FACE when they're drunk thumbs up

We could totally rock out some time dude, I love playing, receiving and sharing guitar knowledge with other players. It's part of the journey towards Thor xD Metal, classic and pop-rock ako (layo kaayo ang last sa?) Who are your influences mate? I'm not from Philippines gyud so di paa kaayo ko sweto sa mga kick ass musicians and places here. Swerte lang na sabot kog bisaya or else I wouldn't have found this forum. Are you a judge by any chance? I'd love to hear your comments on the guitarists that have appeared so far.

In music influences, you could say it's underground, but the talent of these guitar players I know are extraordinary! There's a link already in the starting pages of this thread.

Tsk~ I had a feeling something like would happen. If they didn't practice, then it's their fault. No way I'm free on November 1 now.
