Dear fellow outdoor enthusiasts:

Warm greetings!

In behalf of BAKTASI ADVENTURES in coordination with CENTRO OUTDOOR SPORTS UNLIMITED, we are deeply honored to invite you/your organization to the 4th ANNUAL VISAYAS CAVE CONGRESS on April 7-9, 2006 at Las Navas, Northern Samar.

The activity is a three-day eco-adventure tour of the KM. 3 Cave System and the Pinipisakan Falls which shall include principally caving, water rafting/tubing, hiking, swimming, camping and river cruising.

Registration fee is pegged at P350.00 per participant inclusive of a free t-shirt, certificate and transportation from Poblacion Las Navas to Bgy. San Isidro of the same municipality. Students shall be given discounts. Please be advised to bring a valid school I.D.

A. WHAT TO BRING

KM. 3 is a WET CAVE. And caves are usually cold and damp inside plus the fact that it is a wet one, we can expect streams or rivers inside. So please be advised to bring with you the necessary caving gears and equipments such as:

• Helmet with a safety lock in it
• Three or more sets of lights (headlamp, headlight, candles & lighters)
• Sturdy caving shoes
• Warm and comfortable clothing
• Gloves
• Water and food provisions good for 3-4 meals (a night will be spent inside)
• Whistle
• Ropes (for those who knew how to use them)
• Trash bags for wastes (NOTE: GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT – GIGO!!)
• Emergency medicines
• Sleeping gear
• Extra batteries for the lights
• Other camping essentials like tents, hammocks, cook sets, etc.
• Life jackets (optional)

B. GROUPINGS

There will be groups and sets of activities which the participants can select from based on their interests, likings and capacity. A participant is advise to choose which activity he/she will be participating.

• GRP A - those participating in all activities
• GRP B - participate in all activities but refer a shorter length of
Stay inside the cave; if not spending the night inside the
Cave, will set up camp at the Sag-o riverbanks.
• GRP C - participate in caving but not rafting or tubing
• GRP D - no caving and rafting but only hiking and camping

D. HOW TO GET HERE

1.Participants coming from LUZON and/or Manila area.

• Catarman is accessible by land and air means of transportation. Asian Spirit airlines flies 4 times a week (MWFS schedule). Bus companies like the Silver Star, Philtranco, CUL, Elavil, to name a few have a day-to-day schedule from Cubao-Catarman-Catubig. It usually takes at least 18 hours by bus to reach Catarman (travel by ferryboat included).
• Upon reaching Catarman, jeepneys as well as vans for hire (megataxis) are available en route to Catubig.
• At the town of Catubig, motorboats will ferry passengers to the town of Las Navas.
• Approximate fare rates are the ff:
 Asian Spirit – P 2500.00 one way
 Buses (aircon) – P 900 + one way (ferry boat fare not included)
 Megataxis – P80.00 one way
 Motorboats – P40.00 one way

2. Participants coming from the Visayas and Mindanao areas.

 It also accessible by land and sea transportation. Point of reference: CEBU CITY.
 From Cebu city, one can either take the Supercat or Roble Shipping bound for Ormoc city or the Don Martin Lines bound for Calbayog city.
 Upon reaching Ormoc city, Eagle Star Bus lines bound directly for Catarman are available at the Bus Terminal. If one opts for a cutting trip, either he can take vans bound for Tacloban then van transfers again bound for Catarman at Tacloban city. Or he can take the Eagle Star Bus at Tacloban city.
 Upon reaching Calbayog city, jeepneys, bus or vans are available en route to Catarman.
 Follow the same route stated above upon reaching Catarman.
 Those coming from Mindanao, buses bound for Manila can drop them at the Allen Port then take jeepneys bound for Catarman.
 Approximate fare rates are the ff:
• Supercat – P600 + one way
• Roble – P 352.00 (de luxe)
• Don Martin – P500+ one way
• Eagle star Ormoc to Catarman – P356.00
• Van Ormoc to Tacloban – P120.00
• Vans Tacloban to Catarman – P350.00
• Eagle star Tacloban to Catarman – P256.00
• Jeepneys Calbayog to Catarman – P120.00

DAY 1 CONGRESS OPENING

7:00 – 12:00 Noon - ARRIVAL AND REGISTRATION (Municipal Hall,
Las Navas, Northern Samar)

DAY 2 CAVING PROPER

7:30 A.M. - Start hike to KM. 3 (approx. 3 kms. Hike to the
cave)/ Crossing of the Hanging Bridge to the cave.
9:00 A.M. - Caving proper

DAY 3 continuation

12:00 Noon - expected time of arrival after exploring km. 3 cave
at the riverbank of Sag-od River.
- LUNCH
1:30 P.M. - Prepare for rafting/tubing down to Ginagatusan lake.
2:00 P.M. - water rafting/tubing down to Ginagatusan lake
3:30 P.M. - expected time of arrival at the Ginagatusan lake
4:00 P.M. - short hike to Pinipisakan Falls
4:30 P.M. - back at base camp
5:00 P.M. - set-up tents/wash up/prepare for dinner
7:00 P.M. - Solidarity Nite dinner/cultural exchange

DAY 4 HOME SWEET HOME

OPTIONAL ACTIVITY

After the three day eco-adventure tour of KM. 3 and Pinipisakan Falls, those interested to go on further adventure in a trek to Mt. Huraw in San Jose de Buan, Samar or further caving at Langon-Gobingob cave in Calbiga, Samar may either contact Ricky or Rommel of Centro Outdoor Sports Unlimited. But this is subject to additional cost and charges on the part of the participants.

Suggested Clothing and Supplies for a beginner caver:

Dress in layers
Good Solid Shoes
Durable Pants (for example, jeans that stand up to crawling or warm fleece pants with a nylon potecting them from the outside)
Ribbed Sweatshirt (If cotton not suggested but will work)
Polypro (Plastics are perferred when at all possible)
Long Underwear
Wool Socks
Synthetic (non-cotton) clothing that stays warm when wet.
Three light sources (club provides to members one main light source)
Cave Helmet (with internal suspension) (club provides to members)
Go along with AN EXPERIENCED LEADER

Additional Suggestions

Other clothing that will help:
Knee Pads, Elbow pads (A dream come true
after your first trip)
Wet Suit (you can wear polypro underneath
and works great for warmth)
Coveralls
Rubber Boots and/or Waterproof Socks
Warm Gloves

Cold Weather Caving Extras
(Late October to Late April) During this season it is
usually too cold to change outside, especially if you
are wearing a wet suit because it will freeze to your
body.
Sturdy Bag (to carry clothes to cave)
Warm after caving clothing
Jacket
Sleeping Pad (thermarest)
Boots without laces prefered,
laces freeze and have to be cut
