Is the Camera or Lens More Important? A Poll

The TS currently has a Canon 450D + Kit Lens and 50mm f1.8. He also uses a Canon Powershot A710 IS as backup. And In my opinion, he takes really, really great shots with just that. See for yourself: dbgg1979's photostream

So I think it's mostly the user and not the gear. If given a 5D Mk-II or a 1Ds Mk-III, even with a 50mm f/1.8, the TS would still probably make great shots. Or if given a Canon 24-70L Zoom lens mounted on his 450D, he still would be taking great shots.

So it all boils down to what he wants in the end.

"not the gear" - disagree. naa koy 550D with EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM = mediocre shots for the F1 night race. kung nature og landscapes ok kaayu ang akong 75-300mm but di sya mag-silbi capturing ~300kph nga F1 cars! simply just not wide enough to blur the steel fences on the foreground. 300mm at f/5.6 is not fast enough. mas maayu pa akong 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS kay got more decent panning shots sa F1 cars. Or any indoor sports nga inadequate ang lighting, di mag-silbi ang slow lens. Lesson learned, mao nag-buy kog prime lens EF200mm F/2.8L II USM for next yr F1. Conclusion: naay different lenses sa different application, so if your gear doesn't fit for what you want bisan maayung laki paka nga photog di jod ka maka-compete.

"user ability" - agree. kung ang sitwasyon calls for a general purpose lens (naa sa 18-70mm focal length) unya mada rag ISO 800 or lower (meaning adequate kaayug lighting) og using lenses in aperture range f/4-5.6 - diri makita ang creativity sa user.

Pero mga amigos/amigas all bodies og lenses are not created equal - the world is just not fair. Nahh... tanan na lang unta ta photographer sa National Geographic, Discovery Channel, Sports Illustrated og uban pa. Di natu na sila maawat kay kulba na silag equipment/gears.

uhmm im a 450d user planning to buy 17-40mm f4.. nakabasa ko na ang TS kai 450d user so nahan unta ko mangayo ug opinion ani na combo mga sir..

uhmm sa akong prme na dunggan sagaran iingon jd sa mga taw dre sa forums kai.. invest on lens jd.. pero pagbasa nako dre sa poll nagkagubot man hehehee pero daghan ko nakat.unan.. hehehe i know kai sa akong 450d di jd ko pwede kaayo mag taas ug ISO kai murag noisy na hehehe

but if i have to vote.. cheap cam + expensive lens..
hehe maybe bias ra ko kai entry level ra ako cam.. hehehee

cheap body with expensive lens... or pwede ra gani ang lens sa imoha cheap body aron cheap sad, after all ang nagdala ra gyod ang bida ana... hehe.... mas nindot na nga maayo na kaayo ka inig upgrade na nimo para mas mo maayo pa gyod ka...

brod, mas maayu nga mupalit kag EF-S17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM kaysa EF17-40mm f/4L USM... wla ray 2k ang price difference but u will have a very sharp image quality sa 17-55mm. mao ra ni sya sa canon range ang dili L lens nga L lens ang abilidad plus IS pa jod og labaw sa tanan fast lens ni sya (f/2.8 wide aperture). u need only half the amount of light compare sa imong f/4. very good ning 17-55mm f/2.8 esp sa indoor nga dili allowed ang flash photography.

pero kung ang imong 450D naa nay kit lens (usually 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS) MAS maayu nga mupalit kna lang og prime EF200mm f/2.8L II USM, same price range ra sa EF17-40mm f/4L USM but u get the benefit of a fast telephoto lens.

akong gears karon kay kit lens 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS, 50mm f/1.8 II, 100-300mm f/3.5-5.6 USM og 200mm f/2.8L II USM. og 550D body. more or less covered na nko ang common focal length range. If lang the need arise, i would love to buy EF-S10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM for wide-angle apps.

to add, ingon man ka nga imong experience sa imong 450D kay noisy na kaayu sa high ISO - ma-minimze na sya if imong aperture is wide (f/2.8 ) kay maka lower man ka sa imong ISO.

I used to think, invest on lens then camera later... but with technology today, maka "compete" ang kit lens (I don't think clients or starters will notice the difference anyways). cost wise it will be cheaper but the value will depreciate quickly as to new bodies comes out every 15 months or so...

Agree with cheap body and good lens. Although, now since I'm travelling, I'm going to a smaller G11 for weight considerations.

dpende siguro unsa ka kadugay nag photog.. but for starters.. like me.. lens jud una.. heheh pang ruborubo na 500d.. heheh
