‘Ultraelectromagneticjam’ Volume 2 is well underway

It’s been 12 years since the pop-rock band The Eraserheads took the country by storm via their debut "Ultraelectormagneticpop."

But having been a witness to a highly successful "Ultraelectromagneticjam" concert last Nov. 29 at the UP Theater where various bands paid tribute to the 90’s rock legend, we’re still awed by the magic that Ely Buendia, Raymund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala, and Marcus Adoro still weave on their fans.

The fans were ruthless that night. Imagine seeing them bowing down with arms outstretched to Marcus Adoro who came onstage to surprise the audience and played bass to Paolo Santos’s rendition of the monster hit "Magasin?" They were shrieking, cheering and shouting for him.

And after the last song, "Huwag Kang Matakot" had been played by Orange and Lemons, the audience just refused to stand up and leave, as if waiting for some miracle to happen and the boys of Eraserheads would come crashing through the stage and play live! After all, unknown to the audience that night, Raymund and Buddy were also at the backstage separately, having been invited to the event by the organizers.

And there was one moment right there that seemed to beg for it, for old times’ sakes perhaps? But in our mind, that was a moment that longs to relive a golden era that has ushered in a whole new world for the rock scene in the local music landscape.

The occasion was a fitting pinnacle to the launch of "Ultraelectromagneticjam," the album released by Sony BMG Music Entertainment to pay tribute to the music of The Eraserheads and which, we were told, is now selling like hotcakes, even before the recording company could service a carrier single for the album. The fans just couldn’t get enough of them.

The artists who performed that night were Southborder ("With A Smile"), 6Cyclemind ("Alapaap"), Imago ("Spoliarium"), Barbie Almalbis ("Overdrive"), Sugarfree ("Tikman"), Kitchie Nadal ("Ligaya"), Isha ("Torpedo"), Sponge Cola ("Pare Ko"), MYMP ("Huwag Mo Nang Itanong"), Radioactive Sago Project ("Alcohol") and Cueshe ("Hard To Believe"). Sorely missed were Francis M who did "Superproxy," Rico J. Puno who did "Ang Huling El Bimbo," and Brownman Revival who instrumentally shot to fame via "Maling Akala."

And there’s more. Soon, the carrier single for "Ultraelectromagneticjam" will be launched, Francis M’s "Superproxy" and it will be accompanied by a music video that also features Eraserheads main man, Ely Buendia in it. You see, Ely collaborated with Francis in the recorded version of "Superproxy." Next single would probably be Southborder’s "With A Smile."

Don’t be surprised to hear that the Volume 2 of "Ultraelectromagneticjam" is well underway. Common lamentations we hear is that there are still so many of their E’heads favorite songs that were not included in the album.

So, to those who want to hear "Toyang," "Julie Tearjerky," "Tindahan ni Aling Nena," "Sembreak," "Kaliwete," "Cutterpillow," "Shirley," among many other hits being sung by the likes of Parokya ni Edgar, Hale, Bamboo, etc. you just have to sit tight and wait for the next installment to happen next year.

If you listen to "Ultraelectromagneticjam," you would surely want to go back to the original and listen to more of them. A reminiscing of sort. That happens to us everytime we enjoy our album’s personal picks: Southborder’s "With A Smile," Paolo Santos’s "Magasin," Brownman Revival’s "Maling Akala," Imago’s "Spoliarium," Rico J. Puno’s "Ang Huling El Bimbo," and Radioactive Sago Project’s "Alcohol."

And perhaps this is what the bosses of Sony BMG felt, too, that’s why they have thought of this wonderful idea of releasing a collectors’ dream, limited edition CD box set of all of Eraserheads’ albums with all of the trimmings – posters, videos, T-shirt, and other E’heads paraphernalia. Release date will soon be announced.

    * * *

We sat down with Ely Buendia and the members of his new band Pupil last Tuesday at I.O. inside ABS-CBN compound in Quezon City and the first question we asked him was, how does it feel that there is already a tribute being paid to the Eraserheads for its contribution in the local rock music industry?

Ely, who we must say looks so much better now, even younger-looking than during the time we first launched him at E’heads, says "it still feels surreal" and smiles. "I’m happy," he adds, even as he acknowledges the great success of the tribute album just released.

So why was he not present at UP that night? Smiling, Ely said, "baka sumabog ang UP sa sobrang init." It is no secret that Eraserheads disbanded under a cloud of much internal chaos in 2000. The boys have yet to patch things up between them although Ely says he is at peace now.

He doesn’t regret anything, he reveals, not even the disbandment of the group. "I’m happy to have this new group to work on. It feels so much fresher and newer. Siguro kung hindi kami umalis sa E’heads dati, laos na laos na kami ngayon," he said meaningfully.

The pronouncements simply say everyone’s dream of a reunion concert for The Eraserheads happening anytime soon is just not going to materialize. "At least not now," Ely told us politely.

When complimented on his aura of calmness and peace, Ely says "salamat kay Dianne" referring to his partner and the mother of his five-year-old,very handsome son Eonboy. The beautiful Dianne also acts as Pupil’s manager. She was described by Ely as "my drink, my rock, my breath, my fire" in the album inlay of Pupil’s "Beautiful Machines."

Pupil, whose album sales reportedly ranks 2nd to the "Ultraelectromagneticjam" in Tower Records, is composed of Ely and guitarist Yan Yuzon, bassist Dok Sergio, and drummer Boks Jugo and its album is a homecoming of sorts for Ely in his home studio, Sony BMG Music. "I’ve come back like a prodigal son. I thank the BMG bosses, Rudy (Tee), Vic (Valenciano) and Ciso (Chan) for not losing faith in me," he ended.
