for me, letting go happens in two ways. first, when you're not happy anymore so you have to let him/her go because you'll only gonna hurt him/here. second, when your partner is not happy with you anymore so you have to let go, set him/her free, and wish him/her happiness.
setting free happens when you're partner is not happy with you anymore and you have to set him/her free. you can't say "i don't love you anymore so i have to set you free." it's the opposite.

was i able to give justice to the question?

    well said, rain|spirit.

My take on this is: LETTING GO means, acceptance... being happy for the other person (brace yourself because it is easier said than done esp if love nimo xa). SETTING FREE means, allowing your heart to heal... wala man ka gipa asa, if you were told from the very start kung unsa jud status - then mao na, you don't have the right to be angry or feel betrayed. So, better, set your mind and heart free of all pain and guilt na lang (again, there's a temptation to feel angry. Don't).

Setting free is setting your mind that there is no turning back.

A friend sent this to me:

    * SETTING FREE *

It's a seriously hard thing to let something you love go

But, you know the old saying...

"if you love something, set it free"

It may be true, but when the time comes to set that

thing free, it's as if life throws you one of the

    sharpest curveballs.

As soon as what you love is set free,

you're either going to hit or miss.

A friendship is one of life's most sacred treasures.

When a friendship is made, a special bond is weaved.

    -----

    So,

....I would rather have a true friend than end up with nothing at all..
