YN460II problem

OKay so today on a shoot. one of my YN460II's just turned off. I didn't think anything of it so I tried to turn it back on. it would turn on and then just turn off. So i figured maybe the batteries were dead as I havent charged them for 2 shoots already. So I changed the battery. What happened next is what got me worried about the flash.

It started to make some poping sounds and the ready light would not go green. i felt the flash and noticed it was hot so I immediately turned it off. removed the batteries and they were really hot as well.

It smells like some burned plastic or something when u open the battery compartment. and now the flash doesnt turn on anymore.

I'm guessing something is fried inside. should i try to fix it or just order another one.

thats a common problem with yongnuo specially with their 460 series.

I'm not surprised... its a yongnuo what else can we expect I know so many people who have burned their YN speedlites whether by regular use or strobist style.

I recommend you stay away from this brand. There's just too many incidents already. Chip and Godcode are both YN users, they burned their speedlites too. Try nissin, sunpak,sigma or vivitar but if the budget permits, get one that's the same brand as your camera.

FYI: I'm a nissin di622 user - canon mount and modified for use with RF triggers. I'm very pleased with this flash but I'm working on getting a canon 430 ex II. Your camera works best with same brand speedlites.

i own and used 9 yn's for 2 years now. it never burned out except one that doesnt fire anymore on M mode. 2 mark 1's and 7 mark 2's. it survived na around 6000-student js proms and graduations last march, used extensively as training units for more than 30 workshop students plus various events, parties, etc. and its still popping good. (the very first mark 1 i bought was a reject na and ackerly of tayhua doesnt want to sell it at first kai bu-ak na ang pull-out diffuser nya wala na stand. but i like the mark 1 kai lower iya power kai sa mark 2 so its very usable in dark portraits and product shot filler) so i dont question the durability of this flash except they probably have bad qc up there

a lot of photographers, especially those on business cant ignore this brand considering its way cheaper than the rest. we all know that to do full strobist, we have to have at least 3 units. and after every workshop, a lot of the participants bought a unit or 2

imho, maybe you just try to care of it like we do: take the batts out after each shoot, dont use fast-charged batteries and most importantly - dont rapid fire

the nikon mount of nissin di622 doesn't need modification. you just need to make sure you have the latest firmware. check with the vendor first. I guess the only way for you to test/check if its updated is to test it with RF triggers, or buy your flash from your trusted/suking vendor.

Well you're one lucky guy Most of the people I know that are in the business of photography tend to avoid this brand for its low power, slow recycle time and other inconsistencies = unreliable. That's their opinion however. I only consider myself a serious hobbyist and the experiences of the people around me with this type of flash has influenced my opinion about this brand. They are mostly professional wedding photographers. So not firing rapidly is probably not an option for them.

anyway, I'm sure adolph can have that replaced if its still under warranty and give this brand a second chance.
