"Latest death toll of Hong Kong hostages is 8.
Latest news reporting in Hong Kong that the Chief Executive (Governer) of Hong Kong Government has tried to call the President of Phillppines to ask about this incident, but no one answered. Right now only Phillippines Minister of Foreign Affairs could be reached."
Breaking News Hostage incident in the Philippines
He asked what’s next; I ask, Now, What?
I have read one of the blog that was posted a long time ago, after the hostage taking last March 2007 by Jun Ducat. In this blog it asked “Will this serve as wakeup call to Pinoys who may be in denial of the socio economic and political reality? Or will it inspire others to do their own version of hostage taking?” and “What’s next after this unfortunate incident? Will it bring the much needed reforms to reduce hunger, generate more jobs, more investments on health and education?”
I’ll go for the inspiring of others to take their own hostage taking, and for the last question, I guess, they were some but not enough to save them. I was struck of what Presidential Communications head Sonny Coloma said, “The authorities are on top of the situation to ensure that the hostages are safe.” He said police officers have undergone training in how to deal with hostage-taking scenario.
Was that the way Philippine trained police officers take hostage scenarios? Should the hostage takers as well as the hostages’ lives be taken? Were the scene supposed to be that all hostages shall be safe and sound, and the hostage taker taken to legal action? We are all in question but still no answer. Did they even do the right thing in dealing the hostage taking?
For me, the event was horrible than the hostage taking alone, the outcome was the worst. It’s a very big mark of shame for the history of our country. It was as if police didn’t care for the lives of the hostages inside the bus, believing after what the driver had said that everybody was dead, they didn’t even investigate at it carefully first before going after the bus, smashing the windows and firing guns at it. Was that even called professionalism?
I think everything was going to be fine for all of us, until policemen took his brother, both the brothers are policemen, they know what goes around behind the furnish of the police’s buildings. The hostage taker knows what would happen if they’re going to take his brother away, that was the thing that enraged him. But still, authorities as usual are blind and deaf of this, and still took his brother. This would have ended up nicely and calmly but then with their actions, they will leave other people from different countries thinking that our policemen don’t know what they’re doing and are now afraid to come and visit Philippines because our security is rotten. Imagine you are a Chinese, and you see that your fellowmen has been held hostage and dies just because the policemen of that country doesn’t know how to handle the situation. Will you ever come to visit that country on your own, despite of the insecurities of what had happened? For me, I don’t think so, unless I am suicidal but still I rather take my own life, than to be hit by a stray bullet during a cross fire between the police and the hostage taker. Who knows, the bullets that hit the hostages were not from the hostage taker, it was a stray bullet shot by one of the policemen. Have you ever thought of that? And besides, I don’t think the hostage taker really intends to kill any one of the passengers of the bus, for his mere agenda was to make his motion of reconsideration be heard.
Do we really have to take hostages, mutiny, bombing, bloody rally just to be heard from our government? Does it always have to be like that? I know the government and the elite people can see and hear the cries of the poor Pilipino people shouting for justice, food, education, job, land and housing, but they choose not to. Is it because they’re busy pocketing the money for their own benefits, or they are just plainly what? Even if we tried out our best in doing good for others and for the country, but if others can’t come out on their senses and stop thinking of their selves, then nothing will happen. Philippines will become worse! Even if the new President promised a “Pagbabago!” but still others won’t stop thinking of themselves, nothing will happen! Nothing! When are we going to act? When will we unite? Do we have to wait for zombies to attack our land just for us to be united and fight out zombies side by side? Same people are going up and up but increasing number of people are going down.

Statement of the President on the hostage-taking incident at the Quirino Grandstand
2010-08-23
With the rest of the Filipino people, I wish to offer our deepest condolences to the families of the victims whose lives were lost in the hostage situation at the Quirino Grandstand. The Secretary of Foreign Affairs has conveyed our deep feelings of sorrow to the Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China and the people of Hong Kong through Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang. I have tasked Secretaries Soliman and Lim to provide everything necessary for the recovery and return home of the survivors. I have directed the fullest cooperation with the Hong Kong authorities on the part of our officials.
From the onset of this incident, the hostage-taker seemed to not be belligerent, as shown by the release of hostages. These were encouraging signs.
We were going to wait him out. The idea was to let the ground commanders who are the experts in this field handle the operation with minimal interference from people who are less expert.
But the situation deteriorated rapidly when, during the course of the negotiations, he was given the letter of the Ombudsman in which she promised to personally review his case. As he was reading the contents of the letter, while talking to an unknown individual on the phone, he became increasingly agitated.
The presence of his brother also added to the tension.
At this point, he threatened to kill a hostage. The police decided to remove the brother from the scene. As the negotiators were departing, the negotiators were shot at.
Media coverage of his brother being taken into custody further agitated the hostage-taker.
Shots were fired. They seemed to be warning shots, as there was no audible indication of tumult or chaos to show that the hostages were in immediate danger.
Nonetheless, the negotiators tried to reestablish contact with the hostage-taker but they were unsuccessful as the cellphone of the hostage-taker was continuously busy. He also refused to answer the throw-phone provided for him by the authorities.
The escape of the driver, combined with his reports that the hostages were being harmed, forced the assault to happen. When the vehicle began to move, and with reports that he had hand grenades, a decision was made to immobilize the vehicle as it would have made the situation even more dangerous.
As we know, the incident tragically ended in the deaths of eight innocent civilians.
We expect more of the facts to come to light and I have ordered Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo and Justice Secretary Leila de Lima to thoroughly lead this review.
