You can even change your perspective of dating...
It is not so you will know others but to know yourself.
It is a fact it is easier to know others because you can actually see what you are doing.
Then next thing to do is determine those qualities and reflect it towards yourself, do you have the characteristic or not?
Being self-actualized is a very wonderful thing, It allows you to use your strengths to the best of your abilities, and at the same time moderate your weaknesses.
The experience of a date is very important because of its one-on-one nature, sooner or later, you can have a better grasp of yourself thus making it easier to know if a relationship would work between you and your date.
