The most dangerous animal is the one that is cornered.
And this is what the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors resembled as they fought tooth and nail and came up with a resounding 76-75 win over the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars in a wild and wooly Cesafi seniors game marred by a controversial finish late Friday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
In spite of their meager-numbered roster, seven to be precise, the Warriors fought hard and waxed hot in the first three periods and survived a huge comeback by the Jaguars for their fiest win in two games.
The Jaguars were denied an overtime session after Jemar dela Pena's three-point attempt at the buzzer was ruled just a two-pointer by game officials.
USC was leading, 76-73, with just 3.3 ticks left on the clock when USJ-R raced down the court and found dela Pena in the corner, who promptly sank a basket from afar for what the Jaguars thought was the game-tying jumper.
However, much to the USJ-R camp's dismay, notably head coach Edito Salacot, the basket was ruled a two-pointer as dela Pena was stepping on the three-point line.
USJ-R tried to ask for USC's video to confirm the basket but the latter refused to let their opponents borrow it.
In addition, an interview with Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy confirmed that the league does not have any rule that allows officials to use video to review calls.
In the other seniors game last Friday, the nine-time defending champions University of the Visayas Lancers got down to business in the fourth period and vanquished the Cebu Institute of Technology Wildcats, 89-75, for their second win in as many matches.
