Ear cropping and tail docking were done in times past because they were needed so that the dog would not receive injuries since most, if not all breeds that required this done were either working dogs or terriers, the procedures were also done to dogs for fighting , since it offered less to grab hold of during a fight.

here is some interesting information on the history of cropping.
    History about Ear Cropping

nowadays cropping and docking ARE NOT REQUIRED whether it be for show or for medical reasons.

There are no medical reasons for ear cropping, as it is a purely a COSMETIC surgery, and am sorry but Dobermans are not more prone to infections if they are not cropped, the breeds that are more prone to this are the ones with extra large ears, such as the basset hound and beagle for example. this is due to the fact that the ears are larger than normal and can trap moisture and dirt more easily than other breeds.
and the cropping does not ensure that your dog will not have ear infections.
The procedure itself is quick. it is the healing period that can take a long time. but it is a painfull procedure. And most of all there is still a chance that the dogs ears will not stand up properly.

so it is my recommendation that if its just for aesthetic reasons not to have your dogs ears cropped, in fact it is a procedure we do not do anymore at the hospital.

in my opinion ear cropping should only be done if there is a valid medical reason. so out ang looks and purely cosmetic purposes.

for me, im against ear cropping or even tail docking. i also dont like people who put their dogs in cages.
i love my dogs, i cant even imagine them inside cages or inflicting harm to them just to make them look good.
