    [glow=blue,2,300]House inquiry witness killed
By Carmel P. Geverola & Mia E. Abellana Of Sun.Star Cebu

A former employee who testified against two Cebuano businessmen in a congressional inquiry on illegal drugs in 2001 was shot dead last night in Labangon, Cebu City.

Ananias Dy, 50, was on his way home to Nivel Hills, Cebu City, when attacked at 7:40 p.m. Dy had just stopped his motorcycle for a red light at Salvador and Katipunan Sts. when two men on a motorcycle stopped beside him.

The passenger then pulled out a gun and shot Dy.

Dy managed to get off his motorcycle and run about seven to eight meters. But the gunman chased him and shot him again.

SPO1 Desiderio Mendaros of the Cebu City Homicide Section said Dy’s body bore several gunshot wounds.

Witnesses, quoted by team leader Chris Bautista of the Labangon barangay tanods, said they heard at least five gunshots.

A stray bullet hit a 12-year-old girl near her left knee.

Mendaros said Edjean Gabutin of Sitio Lutaw-lutaw in Labangon was sitting by the roadside with her grandmother, selling eggs.

She saw the shooting. Later, she felt pain in her leg and thought a stone had hit her.

Gabutin was taken to the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) by her grandmother.

Some bystanders also helped put Dy in a taxi. Gerald Echavez, a concerned citizen, accompanied Dy to CCMC, where the latter was declared dead on arrival.

The gunman and his companion were seen heading toward Salvador St., while some witnesses said the men were going to Katipunan.

Some witnesses also had conflicting accounts on whether the culprits were wearing helmets or masks. Some said their faces were uncovered.

They also could not give a clear description of the two men’s clothes or appearance.

Raymond Chan, a nephew of Dy, told the responding homicide team that his uncle just came from his (Dy’s) mother’s house in Doña Esperanza Village in Tisa.

Five empty shells, one slug—possibly from a .45 caliber—were found at the crime scene.

“I am shocked to learn about that (killing). I almost saw the killing. I passed the street on my way to Tisa 15 minutes after it happened. Traffic was heavy. I thought it was another vigilante attack. It was only later that I learned it was Dy,” Rep. Antonio Cuenco told Sun.Star Cebu last night when sought for comment.

Cuenco (Cebu City, south) was chairman of the House committee on dangerous drugs when Dy and his co-worker, Bernard Liu, testified against businessman-brothers Peter and Wellington Lim in October 2001.

Dy and Liu had linked the brothers to the illegal drugs trade, a charge the brothers both denied.

“This matter should be investigated. I condemn this killing. He was a witness. I am not saying that the shooting is linked to that, but it is one of the angles the police should look into,” Cuenco said.

The last time the congressman talked to Dy, who had said he was Peter’s bodyguard, was about a year ago.

“He talked to me about Bernard’s illegal drug trafficking case but he did not mention that he was in danger,” Cuenco said.

Dy also did not ask for police protection, he added.(CPG/MEA)

Guys, what's your opinion towards the killing of Ananias Dy? Does this something to do with as a witness against the Lim brothers involved in drug trafficking?

Pagka way ayo. Thats what we get from doing good. Tsk tsk tsk. Dapat jud everybody has a gun aron we can protect ourselves too. Kay kinsa man ang moprotekta nato this time? Even ang mga pulis walay klaro magserbisyo. All I can say to what happened to this witness, I salute you!!!

Bitaw uy, luoy sab intawn. Para nako, ang iyang pag-patay has something to do with the drug inquiry. There's a big possibility for sure. Pero, na wonder ko nganong wala man siya nagpa-under sa police protection program. Bisan mga police karon dili jud kasaligan. Sige man ko'g monitor aning kaso nilang Peter and Wellington Lim.

Kinsa may makasalig anang mga pulis beh? Utro mana sila nga mga badlungon. You can even buy them and their prices are cheap. Im sure gihatagan na sila ug dako dako nga kwarta aron patyon ang eye witness.

It's very possible that Mr. Ananias Dy was taken out by someone with an ax to grind. About why he didn't ask for police protection- we must remember that Mr. Dy used to be a bodyguard himself. He probably knew it was futile to ask for police protection if those within can be bought if the price is right. What happened last night just goes to show why people don't go out of their way to report a crime. Di na jud maau mag pa hero2x- cause most heroes are dead, or will be soon enough. This is bad ! If the police can't solve this- maybe it's time to call the vigilantes.

OT - There's a group in Manila now ( mostly businessmen) who are urging the gov't to allow private citizens to own guns in view of our current peace & order situation. I for one, am for it cause if we don't have anything to protect our family, who does? Ang mga kawatan, kidnappers, rapists specially mga akyat-bahay ra ang naay armas karong panahona. Unya- sakto kuno na ? Unsa man ang atong ikasukol ani nila ? Tirador ?
If all of us have guns in our houses- the bad elements will at least think twice before entering our houses.

Another is Gen. Leandro Mendoza, ga-golf pa gani sila sa country club.

That's one of the reasons I don't believe in the "Justice System" anymore... People with money and influence can hover above the jurisdiction of our constitutional laws....

These high and mighty persons involved in drug trafficking should be the one hunted down by the vigilantes, not only those persons who snatch cellphones in our jeepney...

Talk about discrimination in our 'Pinoy' justice system. We all very well know what or how it is here in our country.
From newspaper accounts- Mr. Ananias Dy - may his soul rest in peace - along with Mr. Bernard Liu testified that their employers, brothers Peter & Wellington Lim were involved in drug trafficking. Remember the golf bag where the drugs were supposedly stashed ?
And we all know how it ended - no case was ever filed against the brothers and now Mr. Dy is dead while Mr. Liu is in hiding because the Lim brothers countersued and he (Bernard Liu) was the one charged with dealing in shabu.

The above story is in today's issue of the Cebu Daily News. There's a 105,000.00 reward offered by Cong. Tony Cuenco equivalent to 3 months of his salary for any information regarding the murder. The congressman is fighting a very lonely & steep battle I believe. Hilum man kaau ang uban diha.
Let's just hope the murder of Mr. Dy is in no way related to the brothers or else it'd be very scary to note what we're all afraid of is really really TRUE.
Now- would anyone care to testify ? Have a nice day everyone.

I think it's time to arm the public. It would be good if we also have gun as public.
